Former Evile guitarist Ol Drake signs worldwide deal with Earache Records

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on 12th December 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

British guitar wizard, Ol Drake, who is best known for his work with Yorkshire thrash lords Evile, recently inked a worldwide, mutli-album recording deal with Earache Records. Ol Drake is currently working on his debut solo album, which is due to be released in 2014 under the project name of Old Rake and is set to include a number of guest musicians. Ol Drake comments:

Very excited to announce signing a solo deal with Earache Records.  I established a great friendship with the guys at Earache over the years while I was with Evile and I was happy to hear they wanted to work with me in a solo capacity.  This will be a studio project entitled Old Rake.  I won’t be touring, and I’m thankful to Earache for being understanding of this and for giving me this opportunity; I wouldn’t rule out doing a few clinics here and there though.

I’ve always been inspired by Steve Vai, and I’ve always wanted to do something in a similar approach orientated around metal with injections of other styles and ideas which interest me.  After recently seeing the film Not Dead Yet about the amazing and inspiring genius, Jason Becker, it really kicked me into gear to do something with my playing; music is all I can really do, so I’m thankful for the opportunity and ability to still create music for people to hear.  Looking forward to getting the music out there.

Ol Drake made his name as lead guitarist for Huddersfield thrashers Evile, during which time the band released four critically-acclaimed albums, scored a top 10 album in the UK Rock charts, toured around the world with such high-profile bands as Megadeth, and won numerous accolades including a prestigious Metal Hammer Golden God award.

In 2010, Ol Drake was asked to join Australian comedian/musician Tim Minchin on stage at the UK’s Sonisphere Festival to help perform his track, Rock N Roll Nerd, and in 2012 was nominated in the Dimebag Darrell Shredder Award at the Metal Hammer Golden Gods, alongside the likes of Devin Townsend and Fear Factory‘s Dino Cazares.

Ol Drake leaves Evile

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 30th August 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Ol Drake has announced that he’s leaving Yorkshire thrash unit Evile. His full statement can be read below:

It’s been half my life (15 years) since I started jamming in a room with three other guys, in a group in which I didn’t know would grow to be Evile, go through what Evile has gone through and achieve what Evile has so far achieved.

Since 1999, I’ve put 100% of my time and life into the band we formed, while us all had/have to sacrifice a lot financially and personally along the way.

I’ve had some of the best times of my life in the past 15 years and met some amazing and fascinating people. I’ve had the huge honour to play a part in so many things I’d never have dreamed of: paying tribute to Dimebag [Pantera] by covering Cemetery Gates in Metal Hammer; supporting Megadeth, Exodus and many bands I grew up listening to; playing and recording with Destruction; touring/seeing places in the world I’d never have got to see otherwise and many more.

Over the past year, I’ve, unfortunately, found myself becoming more and more detached from the touring/band lifestyle.

In my opinion, the music business for a band of our genre and ‘level’ determines a very unrealistic way of life to me, and I personally find it difficult to make a living and have a ‘normal’ life. This is not a plea for sympathy, I’m simply being honest.

I’ve reached a point where I want a family/kids, a house, a steady and definite income and everything in between, and in regard to my personal preferences, a touring band’s income and uncertainties, in the state that I feel they would continue to be in, has become incompatible with how I feel and what I want/need.

There is no animosity between the rest of the band and I. This is purely a personal and financial decision I’ve been mulling over for a while and I wish them all the best for the future. “I am not unappreciative of the position Evile has in the music world; I know a lot of people would love to be where Evile are.

I want to thank each and every person who supports the band, and I want to extend a special thanks to Digby and the Earache Records crew.

Huge apologies to anyone this disappoints, but I have to do what makes sense to me.

I am not quitting writing or playing; I do plan on continuing to record and write my own music (solo project, general composing/recording etc), I just won’t be touring etc.

I’ll still be playing the two upcoming festival shows Evile have.

You can keep up to date with what I’ll be doing on my Twitter or on Facebook. A big thank you to everyone!

Evile released their fourth album Skull on 27th May in Europe on Earache Records and in North America via Century Media/Earache Records. The follow-up to 2011’s Five Serpent’s Teeth was once again recorded with producer Russ Russell (Napalm Death, Dimmu Borgir) at Parlour Studios in Kettering, England. The artwork for the album was painted by artist Eliran Kantor (Testament, Sodom, Hatebreed).

Huddersfield Heavy Metal Festival completes line-up

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 8th August 2013 by Contra Mundi

The Huddersfield Heavy Metal festival now boasts a wholesome and intimidating line-up, headlined by symphonic death metal legends Fleshgod Apocalypse and Polish extreme death metal icons Hate. Within the diseased ranks as support acts are a selection of bands that are a true showcase of talent. First of all Scottish Death Metallers Scordatura, whose bludgeoning sound showcase all of death metal’s finer qualities and creates a symphony of madness. Joining them are Southerners Bound By Evile who will unleash their destructive brand of death metal upon the already tainted public and make them run for cover.  Grieve, with their groovy and heavy riffs encourage headbanging in the most seasoned of metal fans and hearken back to the likes of Black Sabbath.  Londoners Hades Lab offer blackened Grind and a suffocating cacophony of impressive technicality . Also featured are Yorkshire Old school Death metal plague Narcotic Death whose embodiment of possession and misery will make fans wish they’d never graced the good earth. Scouse Black Metal artists Ninkharsag also grace the line-up and offer the early 90’s Black metal scene nostalgia with a modern twist in their unique brand of frozen metal. As an ode to Thrash Yorkshire-men Redmist Destruction will bring down the walls with their furious music and fellow Grim Northerners Wort will serve to provide a melancholy and sludgy form of doom for the audience to be slowly murdered by. Huddersfield Heavy metal Festival, although still in its infancy, is already a pioneering festival and will undoubtedly attract a legion of a crowd to Huddersfield’s most impressive venue; The Parish.

The festival organiser Luke Diesektor, had this to say:

We only wish we could make this bigger, were looking at possibly taking this outside next year, if not, well be having it at another location. Works are already underway in terms of getting licensing and looking at sites but if we don’t have enough PR time well be doing another indoor event next year but at a much bigger venue and the open air in 2015. We’re hopeful to make this one of the premier metal festivals in Yorkshire and the quality of bands we have on is fantastic. Tickets are selling really well so folk need to get in quick to avoid disappointment. Everyone including the bands has been working really hard to make this a success so we predict it’s going to be a great day. People can check us out and the bands via our Facebook, Twitter and the usual places.

The festival takes place on sat 12th October at the Parish Huddersfield and is £20 advance or £25 OTD.  For any enquiries or more information please email: huddersfieldheavymetalfest@gmail.co.uk

Happy Yorkshire Day! Yorkshire’s Top Five Bands

Posted in Editorial/Opinionated, Featured with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on 1st August 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

In celebration of Yorkshire Day (WOO!), we decided – Well, more like our Yorkshire loving editor – that instead of drinking (Yorkshire) tea and eating (Yorkshire) pudding and just being generally Yorkshire, to compile a list of Yorkshire’s top ten bands. Of course, it probably would have been more appropriate to compile a list of ten reasons to as why Yorkshire is official more metal than Lancashire.

5. BAL-SAGOTH

From their ridiculously long album and song titles to having once boasted Dan Mullins (My Dying Bride) and Dave Mackintosh (Dragonforce) amongst their ranks, this band have remained underrated and largely unknown compared to other acts. Also, vocalist Byron Roberts’ lyrical stories are soon to be expanded into short stories and graphic novels, written by Byron himself and illustrated by fantasy artist Martin Handord. Also, they look rather metal in the below picture.

4. EVILE

Hailing from the lovely market town that is Huddersfield, Evile pretty much burst onto the scene, kicking as much ass as humanly possible – Which by Yorkshire standards is a lot. Having toured extensively through the UK from 2004 – 2006, as well as the Netherlands in 2006, Evile managed to land a contract with Earache and since then have toured with the likes of Kreator and Megadeth and supported bands like Machine Head and Sabbat, Evile are keeping Yorkshire on the metal map.

3. PARADISE LOST

Perhaps one of the most influential bands to ever appear on the British doom metal scene, Paradise Lost, who hail from Halifax, were pretty much worshipped by Katatonia – As stated by Jonas Renske  that Katatonia started off as“ Paradise Lost fanboys” – Pretty metal, huh?. Being apart of the Peaceville Three, alongside fellow Yorkshire doom band My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost pretty much pioneered what has become to be known as gothic metal.

2. MY DYING BRIDE

Dark, dreary and typically northern, My Dying Bride embody all the qualities of Yorkshire in their Yorkshire, from their sorrowful violins to the mournful vocals. Regarded by some as the “Godfathers of Doom”, My Dying Bride, alongside fellow Yorkshire folk, Paradise Lost, were at the core of the gothic metal movement – Though none of the newer gothic metal bands even hold flame to My Dying Bride.

1. SAXON

Originally known as Son of a Bitch, Saxon are the front-runners of the NWOBHM scene and probably are the most successful Yorkshire metal band on the scene. They’ve also established themselves as one of Europe’s biggest acts!

Yorkshire thrashers Evile are celebrating this year’s Record Store Day with a number of treats for fans, including an intimate live show at Crash Records in Leeds tomorrow (Saturday, 20th April).

The band will be performing live in the store at 4pm, giving fans the chance to see them in a unique, up-close and personal setting.  Evile are also releasing a split 7″ picture disc with Swedish death metal legends Entombed, featuring Entombed‘s classic 1990 track, Drowned, along with Evile‘s incredible 2012 cover version.

Evile drummer Ben Carter recently commented:

Evile are looking forward to making some stupidly heavy noise at Crash Records in Leeds on Saturday, 20th April in support of Record Store Day!  We’re going to start destroying ears at 4pm, so make sure to get in early as space will be VERY limited!  We guarantee this show will be utter carnage and something very different than the norm.  We can’t wait to see how a circle pit will work in a record store and need our fans there to show us!!!  To mark the occasion, we’ll be selling our new exclusive 7″ split of our cover of Entombed‘s Drowned, with Entombed’s original on the flipside.  All this is to show support to indie retailers, so get yer asses down to Crash and show your support for the old school!!!

Space for the show is limited, but fans who buy the 7″ from Crash Records on the day will get free entry to the show (space permitting).

Record Store Day takes place each year on the third Saturday of April, bringing together artists and independently-owned record stores around the world to celebrate the art of music.  Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day and sold in independent stores.

Evile, Cerebral Bore, Savage Messiah & Damond Plate Set To Rock Hammerfest

Posted in News with tags , , , , on 16th March 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

This weekend sees the return of Hammerfest, the annual metal festival held at Pontin’s Holiday Village in Prestatyn, Wales.

Set to cause a storm at this year’s edition of the festival are Earache’s very own talents Evile, Cerebral Bore, Savage Messiah and Diamond Plate, joining a line-up that includes the likes of thrash legends Anthrax, Metal Blade’s heavyweight death metallers Amon Amarth, Chimaira and more. As well as Earache’s new breed of bands, the line-up also includes a number of Earache alumni, including reactivated madcap thrashers Lawnmower Deth and Saturday headliners Skindred, featuring ex-Dub War frontman Benji Webbe.

Ben Carter of Evile commented: Evile are again going to be let loose at Hammerfest, and we can’t wait to unleash Five Serpent’s Teeth on our cult! It’s an honour to play the main stage, we always have a great time with great people, and everybody knows more people equals more carnage!  So see you all there for beers and mayhem!

Kyle Rutherford of Cerebral Bore also stated: What an honour to be asked to play on this bill, and straight off the back of the Suffocation tour. We love playing these kind of shows as they’re not death metal shows, and we stick out like a sore thumb. This is good for us though, as it gets us playing to people who probably don’t listen to death metal, and gives us a chance to win them over.

Don’t miss these killer bands live at Hammerfest at these times:
