Bridear

Bloody Bride

Heavy Metal

Released: 7th May 2021

via Avex Trax

Hello Bridear! This album is a real treat to listen to. Every song is steller and sounds so damn good. First up though… Who is Bridear? Formed in Fukuoka, Japan in 2012, they are one of Japan’s premier heavy metal bands and now they are setting their sights on the global stage. After releasing the album in Japan on April 14th, they released it internationally on May 7th which is when I got a chance to listen to it. I was immediately blown away by this record. I’ve had a somewhat fascination with music from Japan for a long time. As part of the generation that was hit by the anime boom of the late 90’s, Japanese culture is always something I’ve loved and I, in particular, love the music that comes out of Japan. Bridear definitely feels more like a band that would feel at home in the European Power Metal scene. I got serious vibes of Dragonforce and Sonata Arctica while listening to this album.

The production is crystal clear on this record with every part of the production glistening. You truly feel the impact. The sound of the drums alone is so hard hitting, you really feel the impact of each drum kick and hit. The guitars glisten in the production and the riffs are so well performed. The music is instantly likeable and definitely accessible. If you’re into this sort of thing already then, then I would highly recommend giving them a chance. With sweeping melodies and excellent musicianship Bridear brings their A game to this record. Songs like “Daybreak” and the title track “Bloody Bride” are captivating with catchy hooks and insanely fun riffs that get stuck in your head. Then you have the vocal performance which is so stellar and sits right on top of the already impressive music. It’s power metal done right.

I have honestly been blown away by the presentation of this record. The women of Bridear are talented and clearly have a passion for their music. The sound is clean and clear. My favourite track from the album so far is “Ashes” with its slow build and then the song hits you with a straight up metal tune. It feels like a page ripped from the Iron Maiden guide to songwriting. This album just feels like the complete package. For me, this is one to check out this year and one I need to see live sooner rather than later…. When covid goes away and allows for live shows again!

Eyehategod announce new self-titled album

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on 12th March 2014 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

New Orleans’ infamous band Eyehategod are set to release their first studio album in over thirteen years through a partnership with Century Media for the world outside North America and Japan. Housecore Records will be releasing the new Eyehategod album in North America while Daymare Recordings will handle the album’s release in Japan. The album, which is self-titled, is pencilled for release on 26th May 2014.

The recording process for the new album started with producer Billy Anderson back in the fold (he recorded 1996’s Dopesick). Anderson tracked drummer Joey LaCaze’s tracks prior to LaCaze’s tragic passing last year. A few months later the band reconvened at longtime friend Phil Anselmo’s home studio with producer Stephen Berrigan (Down) to finalize the recording. Mixed by Sanford Parker (Voivod, Corrections House), the album was entirely put together and financed by the band who later shopped it around to labels. With long last friendships with many of the CM European staff, they felt this was the best home for them. Frontman Mike IX mentions:

I have to say I don’t believe we’ve lost nary a step in the creation of this album and we think these newer songs are a killer combination of classic EHG mixed along with our best production, mixing, engineering and songwriting in 13 years. The main and total tragic break in the chain, was obviously last year’s death of our great friend and drummer Joey Lacaze. However, his original drum tracks made it onto the final master recordings and we’re fucking psyched about that…

The first song from the new album, Agitation! Proganda!, can be heard below.

Spaniard gothic rock band Rainover recently inked a deal with Wormhole Death Records/Aural Music and will release their new album Transcending The Blue And Drifting Into Rebirth via Aural Music Group/Wormhole Death Japan sometime in 2014.

The record was produced by Carlo Bellotti and recorded, edited and mixed by Jonathan Mazzeo at Mathlab Recording Studio in Italy. Mastering duties have been consigned to Dennis Koehne and Waldemar Sorychta (for Waldstreet & Denroad, at Flying Pigs Studio in Schwerte, Germany) and the artwork has been done by Mario Sánchez Nevado (Aegis). The band commented:

We are extremely happy to announce that we have signed a deal with the Italian label Wormhole Death. This is a great opportunity for us to present our music to a bigger audience based upon the support and hard work offered by this group of trustworthy professionals, who are capable of being critical in order to get the best results from us, but also amicable and very close to our views on music and the industry. On top of this, we have been working together on every aspect of the production of our new album, so you’ll soon be able to check out by yourselves just how productive our collaboration has been so far, starting by the preview we’re now showing you. ReVamp announce release dates for second album

Posted in Featured, News with tags , , , , , , , , , on 8th May 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Dutch metal band ReVamp – who are fronted by Floor Jansen, who recently accompanied Nightwish on their world tour – have announced the release dates for their second album, which is to be released via Nuclear Blast. The album will hit mainland Europe first on 6th September, followed by the UK on 9th September, Japan on 12th September and finally the US on 17th September. Vocalist Floor comments:

Never before in my career I faced a situation like the one we were in with this album. It was a huge challenge because of several reasons. My sickness caused a major break between the first album and tours plus the writing of the first ideas for the second album and the actual finalization of those songs and the album. And right at the moment we started to pick everything back up after I was sick I joined Nightwish. Like a winter and a summer storm, they bring unexpected things, some nasty ones and some amazingly wonderful!

Also the recording of this album was unlike any I did before because I was on tour with Nightwish most of the time. Guided by Joost van den Broek (ex-After Forever, songwriter first for the ReVamp album) the talented musicians of ReVamp recorded all the instruments and when I came back to The Netherlands I stepped into the studio to find a rough diamond. A shiny dark crystal: ready for my vocals. That was magical! The singing went smoother than ever before. The lyrics are like a roadmap through our storms and through my personal detours and horrors.

The result of this trial will be released on album in September 2013. With pride we can announce our partner in crime from the first album will again join forces with us! Metal and rock giant Nuclear Blast will again make sure ReVamp’s new album reaches YOUR music collection wherever you are on this metal loving planet!

Katana – Storms of War

Posted in Review with tags , , , , , on 14th May 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Band: Katana
Release: Storms of War
Release Date: 2012
Genre: Traditional Metal
Label: Listenable Records

Sweden – Known to be the home of acts such as Arch Enemy, In Flames, Bathory and Abba. The last of which is probably the most known musical export from the Scandinavian nation. Yet Sweden is also home to the metal quintet that is Katana. The band have been described as being in the same vein as the early days of the NWOBHM era. Having only heard of them recently, in my dark corner of the interwebs, I have not set familiarised myself with their sound.

The Reaper is the starting track of the album and straight away the Paul Dianno-era Maidenesque riffs begin roaring blended with a deeper sounding style of Rob Halford-sounding vocals mixed with a slight hint of Manowar influenced vocal melodies. The drums race along the guitars, keeping that old school, hard rocking energy flowing. The solo is insanely played, making you want to bust out the air guitar and begin rocking out in your bedroom. As the track comes to its close, it’s finished off with the addictive classic screams, conjuring up fond memories of the golden days of the NWOBHM scene.

The intro for Wrath of the Emerald Witch sounds eerily like the main riff in Maiden’s song Wasted Years. The vocals take a new form, this time in the form of Yorkshire’s own NWOBHM heroes Saxon. The guitar sections morph, somewhat lycanthropically, into a more thrashier assault of riffs and crunchy bass work. The lyrics take up more of an early day power metal feel, fortunately without the extra side dish of cheese. The third track, Kubilai Khan, rings in a similar vein to Priest’s song Victim of Changes, only faster paced while the vocals have that power metal feel echoing through them. A lot of the riffs are catchier than the cold – the bonus being that they’re a damn sight lot better than having a snotty nose and feeling like death warmed up.

Lyrically, The Samurai Returns, fits in perfectly with the band’s name and the album art while musically and vocally, it almost embodies those old school attitude and sounds that the band demonstrate ever so well in their music. City on the Edge of Forever literally screams with NWOBHM era influences from Saxon and Maiden to Judas Priest and a tasty dash of Blitzkreig. The lyrics provide the paint and the music provides the canvas for what the vocals turn into a beautiful song that is so vibrant and powerful that very few songs can ever compare to it. No Surrender feels more chilled out compared to the other tracks yet it still brings a certain thundering war-like sound to the eardrums. The vocals certainly bring a charismatic tone to the song, blending creatively with the music.

The Land of the Rising Sun is one of the more creatively genius songs on the album, with the Asian styled riffs softer use of percussion yet I feel it doesn’t quite live up energy and magnitude of the rest of the album when it first begins. The vocals still do a great job at telling a story with masterfully penned lyrics. The song progresses, eventually, into a very Maiden-stylised piece, almost feeling like Katana’s own Rime of the Ancient Mariner. The most obvious difference being that it doesn’t last as long as the aforementioned song. The Asian based riffs make a second appearance in the song, keeping the concept of the song alive and kicking like an underdog boxer who refuses to go down.

The Gambit tears its way through, like a toned down version of Motorhead topped with the usual lyrics that dominated the 80s metal scene. Modesty Blaise is another song on the album bringing about the classic power metal musicianship. The bass work has a nice sounding twang to it, giving the song a very distinct appeal. And finally the album comes to a hard rocking halt with The Wisdom of Emond’s Field, that oddly sounds like the previous track before almost recreating a faster version of Tyr’s Hold The Heathen Hammer High. Fortunately, Katana soon bring the song back into its classic metal groundings with a brilliant use of melodic riffs and memorable hooks. The second half of the song brings about a vocal section similar to that of Maiden’s Charlotte The Harlot before morphing back into its old high energy anthem self.

In recent years, it seemed like the only good thing to come out of Sweden was Kopparberg. It would seem, that after listen to this album, I’ve been proven wrong. I’ve always liked classic and traditional metal and Katana have come so close to virtually perfecting the old school sound in one album, which is Storms Of Wars. I think Sweden now have their own Iron Maiden.

4.8/5
