Hate, Belphegor, Suffocation
Klubi, Tampere, Finland
23rd February 2020

I usually tend to avoid attending gigs on a Sunday as it makes the next day difficult. This time however, I was lucky enough to have the next day free which made it possible for me to go. My husband decided to tag along to see Belphegor hoping that they would play some of the old material. I was mainly interested in the Polish blackened death metal act Hate. I like their old stuff and I recently managed to check out the newest release prior to going to the show.

The event started rather early and sadly we missed the first band, a Swedish death-thrash metal group called Carnosus. We arrived just in time to see the German death metal band Betrayal. They played a good, albeit somewhat short set of solid death metal with a thrash metal tinge. One of their songs featured a short melodic part guitar instrumental which was somewhat unexpected but it worked surprisingly well. So not a bad start to the night.

Next up was the main band that I came to see. The Polish blackened death metal outfit Hate put on a hell of a show. These guys hail from the same country as Behemoth and they often get compared to their Gdansk-based brethren due to the similarities in the music style. This show proved though they have developed their own style and they have earned their place in the extreme metal scene on their own merit. This is definitely my kind of metal and I am looking forward to hearing more from these guys. The only issue I had with the performance was that it was too short. They were only on for half an hour. I would have wanted to hear more from Adam the First Sinner and the gang.

The Austrian blackened death metal act Belphegor sure do like their props. The stage was decorated with animal skull motifs and burning incense. They seem to have quite the following too, they actually attracted a bigger crowd than the night’s headliners. Sadly they mostly played newer material which neither me nor my husband were familiar with. The only song I recognized was ‘Lucifer Incestus’. Some of the new tracks sounded decent such as ‘Baphomet’ but a lot of them seemed a little slow and not super memorable.

Suffocation were pretty much what I expected them to be. They played some very solid brutal death metal. That is the main problem that I have with American death metal in general, most of the bands sound the same. There is only a handful of American death metal bands that I like. Most of them do their best to make their music sound as brutal, fast and ferocious. Ultimately though, after minutes of head-banging along to a few of the tracks, you realize that they all sound very similar to each other. It was like listening to one very long song throughout the show. I have to admit that they did a good job of agitating the crowd and getting the mosh-pit going.

Overall, it was a fun way to spend Sunday night. Betrayal were pretty good. Hate were my favorite performance of the night and it’s shame that their set was so short. Belphegor have changed their style quite considerably over the years and I do not like their new stuff as much as the older albums. As for Suffocation, they were decent live but I do not think that I will be checking out their music anytime soon.

Belphegor premier new video for In Blood – Devour This Sanctity on YouTube

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on 1st November 2013 by Nico Davidson

In time for the age-long celebration of All Hallow’s Eve, European black and death metal royalty premiered the video for their new single In Blood – Devour This Sanctity last night on YouTube.com. The clip was filmed at Moskva Hall in Moscow and was recorded and edited by Andrey Kovalev. The song itself is taken from Belphegor‘s latest offering of black and death laced metal Blood Magick Necromance, which was released in January 2011. Commenting on the video, vocalist and guitarist Helmuth said:

What a brutal concert; extreme, obscene and memorable. For the new video I decided to take In Blood – Devour This Sanctity with visual live sequences from the Moscow ritual. Authentic and insane. One of my fave tracks in a live situation. Musick wise inspired by The Hungarian Dances by the classical composer Johannes Brahms ( 1833-1897 ). You also find there all the Belphegor trademarks. Shredding guitars, fast drums and heretical grunts. Enjoy!

The band’s highly anticipated 10th studio album was recorded and mixed at Mana Studios with producer Erik Rutan (Cannibal CorpseGoatwhore, Hate Eternal). The as-of-yet-untitled record is tentatively scheduled for a May 2014 via Nuclear Blast Records. This will be band’s first album since Helmuth’s near death experience, which caused the band to cancel several tours in 2011/2012.

Belphegor only UK show at Damnation

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 16th July 2012 by Nico Davidson

Austrian death metal outfit Belphegor have been confirmed to play their only UK show at Damnation Festival later this year. The band will be playing the Terrorizer Stage.

Belphegor’s Helmuth said: “We are looking forward to shredding the mighty land of NWOBHM, again. It’s always a pleasure and an intense ritualistic raid experience to bring our chaos sound to the UK. Hail Damnation! Hail Death!

Joining Belphegor on the Terrorizer Stage, as announced today by Damnation Festival, will be crust punk pioneers Extreme Noise Terror and British black metal unit Wodensthrone.

Wodensthrone guitarist/vocalist Rædwalh said: “Wodensthrone are very pleased to have been invited to play Damnation Festival; an event that we have seen grow from its inception in Manchester to one of the UK’s premier metal events. I fondly remember the early incarnations of the festival, so to see it grow to its current status is very encouraging. The already-confirmed lineup is extremely promising and for ourselves to be included in it is a humbling testament to this band’s perseverance. With our second album, Curse, now out on Candlelight Records, we are proudly raising the banner of UK Black Metal in 2012 and to be able to cap off a busy year with a Damnation appearance is an honour. Wæs thu hæl!

And completing Damnation’s announcement, progressive hardcore band Devil Sold His Soul will be hitting up the Jagermeister Stage with a new album to show case.

Devil Sold His Soul added: “We last played Damnation Festival back in 2008. It was hot, sweaty, loud and heavy and we loved every minute of it. We always enjoy playing in Leeds and the line-up this year looks incredible. We’ll have a new album out by then and can’t wait to play these new longs live – Bring it on Damnation.”

Announced so far for Damnation Festival 2012 is: Electric Wizard, My Dying Bride, Pig Destroyer, Belphegor, Primordial, Extreme Noise Terror, Textures, Devil Sold His Soul, Aura Noir, Gama Bomb, 40 Watt Sun and Wodensthrone.

Tickets priced £32 are available from http://www.leedstickets.com/ and via the official Damnation Festival site and Facebook through Ticketscript: http://www.damnationfestival.co.uk/tickets and at Crash and Jumbo store in Leeds.
