Nebelfront – Only In My Dreams

Only In My Dreams
Released 12th January 2015
Atmospheric/ Depressive Black Metal/ Dark Ambient
Released via Cursed Records

‘Only In My Dreams’ is the second album from the Austrian black metal band Nebelfront. It is the follow up to their debut ‘Pour ma sœur’ which was released back in 2010.

The opening instrumental Memories caught me by surprise with its melodic guitar intro and strangely pleasant but sombre feel. There’s nothing even remotely close to black metal on there; in fact it sounds more like dark ambient. River on the other hand, is an entirely different beast with its nihilistic black metal screams and a dramatic shift towards a much faster pace particularly in the drums. Oh yes, now this is what I call “black metal”.

This sets the tone for the rest of the album. All the tracks that come after River share the same bleak atmosphere and the pace is similar. Yet unlike that song, the others are considerably longer and more complex in structure. For example, the tile track starts off a little slower than its predecessors and the guitar sounds less bleak and more atmospheric. The vocals however, are just as haunting as on the previous tracks. Then there’s XII. I with its tranquil intro, which marks a brief return to the dark ambient style just before the creepy vocals kick in. Last but not least there is Somewhere, which features a female singer along with some melodic parts sandwiched between the bleak screams.

Overall this album requires some patience from the listener. I wouldn’t recommend this to fans of raw black metal. However if you’re a fan of both black metal and dark ambient or the earlier works of Caïna then you should give this a try.
