Arch Enemy present title track for upcoming album

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on 20th March 2014 by Nico Davidson

Swedish death metallers Arch Enemy announced earlier this week the withdrawal of Angela Gossow from the band’s line-up as well as her replacement, Alissa White-Gluz, formerly of The Agonist. Gossow will now be involved in the management side of things with Arch Enemy. As such, it is now time to lift the veil and see what unholy blasphemous music Arch Enemy have in store with their new vocalist. The title track for the band’s upcoming album, War Eternal, can be heard down below.

Arch Enemy will unleash their 9th studio album, War Eternal, worldwide via Century Media Records and Trooper Entertainment in Japan in early June 2014. War Eternal was recorded in various studios during Winter 2013/2014 and produced by the band themselves. Arch Enemy release details of new album War Eternal

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on 6th March 2014 by Nico Davidson

Swedish melodic death metallers Arch Enemy have begun the mixing of their new album, War Eternal, at their 9th studio with Jens Bogren (Opeth, Paradise Lost) in Sweden, following their most successful world tour to-date and three years after the release of their previous album Khaos Legions. Guitarist Michael Amott comments:

We’ve been producing ourselves, as we did on Khaos Legions. We have a clear vision of what we want Arch Enemy to sound like, and we can actually achieve it without the help of outside producers. We also have the advantage of having two talented sound engineers among our ranks in Daniel Erlandsson (drums) and Nick Cordle (guitar).

We’ve been tracking at a few different studios here in Sweden, the drums at Fascination Street Studio and guitars and bass in another room. We just finished vocals in a third studio with engineer Staffan Karlsson (Khaos Legions) and the mix and mastering will done by Jens Bogren at his Fascination Street mixing facility.

Musically, this album is going a few places we haven’t visited before. As our fans have come expect, our albums have all had their own vibe and War Eternal will leave its own mark. Lyrically it’s a much more personal record, and I feel the songs have more dynamics and depth than ever before. The songs are loaded with strong and vicious metal, drenched in tons of melody and emotion. All the trademarks of Arch Enemy are present, just more in your face and turned up to 11.

The new album, as mentioned above, will be titled War Eternal. Michael explains:

A lot of times life is a struggle, a war against what I like to call ‘mental chains’ in society that try to prevent you from living life the way you want, that try to stop you from making your dreams come true. I have always resented that and I always will. The title sums up our collective attitude a band as well; stages will be destroyed, eardrums will bleed. There will be no choice. This, ladies and gentlemen, is  War Eternal

Arch Enemy will debut new material on a short eastern European tour before the album is released in early June 2014; this trek will then be followed by an extensive run of European summer festivals, including Sweden Rock, Wacken and many more. A full headlining tour in North America, Europe, and the UK will take place in fall/winter 2014. Arch Enemy will once again tour nearly every corner of this world to spread the sound of War Eternal! European tour dates are as follow:

Hammerfall set to return in 2014 in full force

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 5th December 2013 by Nico Davidson

Two years ago, Swedish metal lords Hammerfall announced that they would be taking a creative break after celebrating the 15th anniversary of their legendary debut Glory To The Brave. At the time Oscar Dronjak commented:

We are taking a pause to ensure that we have another 15 years ahead of us.

And vocalist Joacim Cans added:

The plan is to use the year off to recharge our batteries and come back more vital than ever with a new album in 2014.

Hammerfall’s anniversary show in Dalhalla (Shouldn’t that be Valhalla?) was recorded and later released on DVD, followed up by their final show at Wacken Open Air. The German festival was the first show Hammerfall ever did outside of Sweden, and marked the beginning of the long and passionate relationship the band has enjoyed with the German metal fans. After the story had begun and the first chapter ended, they will return and the band are proud to announce that they will be returning to perform at the 25th anniversary of Wacken Open Air. And in true metal style, the show won’t just be a standard one. Oscar Dronjak explains:

It’s very fitting that, when Wacken celebrates its 25th anniversary, they will get a proper Glory To The Brave anniversary show. This will be a throwback show to the European gig that launched it all for us: Wacken Open Air 1997. The set list will consist of all the songs from the first album and we’ll of course add some newer songs at the end. We will do this very unique show at Wacken and nowhere else, so if you miss it, you missed it.

August 2014 will also see the release of a new studio album from Hammerfall. The album is currently untitled but there will be a single released both on vinyl and digitally in June 2014. Oscar Dronjak reveals:

We’ve all kept ourselves busy with various projects of a musical nature, but, man, it feels good to finally announce that we’re going to release a new Hammerfall album next year! The album is set for an August release, and we have already begun writing songs for it. It’s always difficult to tell which direction we will end up going in when you’re in the middle of it, but it feels like this will be a mix of the very best of what we have done over the years. The time off has given us perspective on a lot of things, and the new material seems to reflect this. We’re all super excited to get this going again and bring you a revitalized and reenergized Hammerfall!

This new album will mark a return to Fredrik Nordström, who worked with the band in their early days. Joacim Cans explains:

It’s a great honour to have Fredrik Nordström back as the main producer for Hammerfall. As the father and founder of “The Gothenburg Sound” as well as the producer of Glory To The Brave and Legacy Of Kings we are confident that he will take our music to new and yet unreached levels.

James Michael who had co-produced the band’s latest studio album Infected will once again take over the vocal recordings:

In order to maintain the high vocal standard set on ‘Infected’ we will return to USA and record with multitalented SIXX:AM vocalist James Michael. Never have I experienced such great set-up and environment as when we recorded the previous album. Even though things will be different this time around since he is re-locating in Los Angeles, I am damn sure he will make my vocal chord deliver like never before.

This won’t be the only return to the bands roots. The artwork of the new record will be created by no one else, but Andreas Marschall, who actually was the founder of Hector, seen on Glory To The Brave and many other great Hammerfall artworks.

Chthonic announce release date for upcoming album, Bú-Tik

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 22nd April 2013 by Nico Davidson

Taiwanese metal band, Chthonic, have confirmed June 3rd as the release date for their seventh studio album, Bú-Tik, via Spinefarm Records.

Recorded at Sweden’s Sweetspot Studio by producer Rickard Bengtson, who also worked on the band’s 2011 Takasago Army, Bú-Tik sees the band returning to the scene with their signature brand of symphonic “orient metal”, as they choose to define it; as usual, the musicians continue on their mission to build awareness of the myths of Taiwan and the tragic events in their country’s history.

Bú-Tik – which is based around the story of the 228 Massacre, the Bú-Tik Palace and the Mirror Of Retribution – highlights “righteous violence and justifiable defence”; once more, it takes the listener deep into the folklore and history of exotic Taiwan.

Bassist and band spokesperson, Doris Yeh, stated:

We are very proud to present Bú-Tik to the world; it talks about self-defence, righteous violence and the armed spirits! With this album, we have pushed ourselves to achieve new heights – heights we’ve never imagined before! We are leading metal fans to the next episode of Chthonic!

Track listing is as follows:

01. Arising Armament (intro)
02. Supreme Pain For The Tyrant
03. Sail Into The Sunset’s Fire
04. Next Republic
05. Rage Of My Sword
06. Between Silence And Death
07. Resurrection Pyre
08. Set Fire To The Island
09. Defenders Of Bu-Tik Palace
10. Undying Rearmament (Outro)

The first single, Defenders Of Bú-Tik Palace, will be made available digitally shortly via Spinefarm Records, with a very special video to follow. Doris explains:

For this clip, the first in a series of four, we decided to put ourselves through one month of martial arts training, to prepare ourselves properly. Finally, a couple of days ago, we filmed the video over a 24 hour period, and we are all now covered in bruises and completely exhausted… it’s not easy to go at it for such an extended period!

One the live front, Chthonic are confirmed to play on the Pepsi Max Stage on Saturday June 15th at Download Festival 2013, set to take place over the weekend of June 14th16th at its historical stamping ground of Donington Park.

Chthonic last appeared at Download in 2011, but for this follow-up show they are returning in greater numbers, the plan being to utilise the skills of the oriental orchestra. Doris commented:

This is the first time we’ll have played with the orchestra outside of Taiwan. We’re really hoping to present a show that people will be talking about for some time to come…

Tickets for Download 2013 are available at this location.

From Fuji Rock and Loud Park in Japan, through to Ozzfest in the US, Bloodstock and Download in the UK, and Wacken Open Air in Germany, Chthonic have already made their mark around the world, touring in over 30 countries, picking up awards (including the Golden Melody Award – the Taiwanese equivalent of a Grammy), featuring on magazine front covers, supporting political causes, releasing photo books, appearing in the charts and of course making powerful, unique music steeped in their own culture. Plans are currently being discussed for an autumn UK tour.

Holy Grail sign Europe-wide deal with Nuclear Blast

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 17th October 2012 by Nico Davidson

Formed in 2008 and hailing from Pasadena in Southern California, North American up-and-comers Holy Grail offer a unique blend of the legendary NWoBHM scene with influences of several contemporary heavy metal sub-genres.

After numerous celebrated festival appearances, including Wacken-Open-Air and the UK’s Download Festival and extensive touring with bands such as Blind GuardianExodus and Eluveitie, the time is right for this promising quintet to hit the next level. In that regard, Nuclear Blast Records are proud to announce the Europe-wide signing of Holy Grail.

Nuclear Blast A&R Jaap Wagemaker comments: “Already after we’d listened to their debut EP Improper Burial, it became pretty obvious that Holy Grail – offering a modern version of the old-school heavy metal we’ve grown up with – were the most exciting metal band to emerge from the county of L.A. within the last two decades, as renowned American Decibel magazine had put it. After Metal Hammer UK had nominated the band as best new band at the Metal Hammer Awards even before they had even released their debut album Crisis in Utopia, we knew we had to keep an eye on them. All over Europe, music magazines loved that record and celebrated it by publishing rave reviews.  And ever since we’ve seen them playing two awesome shows at Wacken:Open:Air and British Download Festival, there was no doubt whatsoever that Holy Grail were bringing the leather and steel to a new generation of metal heads. So watch out for Holy Grail’s second coming in 2013!

The band states “We in the Holy Grail camp are very proud and excited to announce that we have recently become part of the Nuclear Blast family. We feel honoured to join the ranks of metal legends and many of our favourite bands, including Accept (who we’ve covered), Blind Guardian (who we’ve toured with) and Testament (who we’d love to tour with)! Fans of Holy Grail can expect all the metallic elements we’ve built our name on taken to the next level on our forthcoming new record Ride The Void. Coupled with the unequivocal might of Nuclear Blast, European domination is inevitable for our new album. See ya on the road!

The band’s upcoming second studio album Ride The Void is set for a European release via Nuclear Blast in early 2013; in North America, the record will be released via Prosthetic Records. Stay tuned for more info coming your way soon! And if you haven’t listened to Holy Grail before, now is your chance to start listening them.

Delain – We Are The Others

Posted in Review with tags , , , , , , on 6th June 2012 by Nico Davidson

Delain
We Are The Others
Symphonic Metal
Released: June 2012
Released via Roadrunner Records

Delain, founded by former Within Temptation keyboardist Martijn Westerholt and ex-To Elysium frontwoman Charlotte Wessels, have become one the most recognised symphonic metal bands in recent years. The band have toured extensively around the globe and have played high profile festivals such as Wacken Open Air and Sonisphere. Up until recently, Delain were touring in support of their newest release: We Are The Others.

The album starts with eerie, almost Gothic and industrial sounding introduction of Mother Machine, which creates somewhat of a mystifying and enchanting atmosphere as the eerie keyboard section and machine-like sounds progress into the fierce guitar riffs. The drums are almost machine-like while the vocals are sultry but ghostly, a strange combination, to say the least but it works. The melodic parts are unexpected but a welcome addition to the song. Electricity begins with a solemn keyboard intro before the guitars kick in, bringing a heavy but laid back sound to the song. The vocals breathe a lot of life into the song, straying it from becoming dull. The keyboard sections, and the guitar solo, are the parts that stand out the most, however. The title track, We Are The Others, begins with a catchy and memorable hook in the form of a keyboard section. The guitar riffs add a lot of emphasis to the keyboards, bringing that hopeful and uplifting sound and atmosphere to the song. The child-like choir brings a quite spine-chilling effect to the track but it fits in well with the piano medley and Charlotte’s vocals. Milk And Honey strays from the sounds of the previous track, starting with an odd synthesiser section that gradually brings it into something more industrial metal based. Fortunately, the track does contain an essence of Delain’s symphonic metal sound as well.

Hit Me With Your Best Shot, overall, is very symphonic rock orientated, straying away from the band’s usual sound. The differing synth and keyboard medleys add a certain level of emotion, which contrasts with the somewhat bland guitar riffs. The vocals are very poignant, working well with the more emotional sounding synth and keyboard sections. The sober combination of vocals and piano, that makes up the intro of I Want You, masterfully paints a tragic, romantic image of emotion. The keyboard sections ring out a very classical sound and the guitars are heavier and more exciting than the previous track. Where Is The Blood might sound like the title of a cheesy vampire film but the song is far from being cheesy. The track features Fear Factory frontman Burton C. Bell, whose vocals add a very aggressive touch to both the song and the chorus. The track rings out a histrionic and fervid sound that is reflected well in the guitars and keyboards. The chorus is memorable, catchy and has a great hook, though it does feel lyrically limited.

Following after is the atmospheric song Generation Me. The strongest point of the song, without a doubt are the keyboard sections. The vocal work isn’t overly impressive or exciting, with most of the energy and excitement being generated by the symphonic musings of the track. Babylon brings a very sinister aspect to the album, with a very evil sound echoing from the guitar and bass work. The lyrics and vocals paint some very sombre imagery as the song progresses on. Following in a similar vein to the last song, Are you Done With Me has a very cold and dark sound, one that even Charlotte’s vocals fail to bring some amount of warmth to. The vocals sound rather diverse, compared to how they’ve been on the vast majority of the album. The intro for Get The Devil Out Of Me rings in similar veins to that of Nightwish though the guitar and vocal sections that follow are typically that of Delain. The keyboard riffs add a dash of freshness to the song, keeping it from turning completely stale. The album finishes with the more symphonic rock-orientated Not Enough that follows down the same musical routes as the vast majority of the album. The vocals are the only part of the song that have some life to them, as the rest of the track seems very bland and flavourless in comparison.

Judging by what I’ve heard from the first two albums by Delain, I see why they’ve got to the point they’re at and why they’re one of the most successful female fronted acts on the scene, however We Are The Others doesn’t do the band any justice. The album, for the most part, is bland and almost every track sounds like the previous one, save for the odd track like Where Is The BloodMother Machine and Babylon. The album is worth adding to the collection for any hardcore Delain fan but I don’t think the band will win over any new fans with this.

2.5/5
