Reckless Love – Spirit

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on 5th September 2013 by Pieni

Reckless Love
“Spirit”
Glam rock
Released on 2nd September 2013
Via Spinefarm Records

 photo recklesscopy_zps35a7f71c.jpg

I’m having serious mixed feelings about this… When they released the first single/video “Night On Fire” I formed my opinion carefully. After all, it was just one song, and despite making it to single, that doesn’t necessary mean that it represents the general sound of the album or that it’s the best song in it. Most times it’s just the catchiest, the most commercial. So after convincing myself that “Spirit” wouldn’t be all “ooooooh ooooooh” eighties-pop-rock style all the time and that it wouldn’t make me feel like I was in a distant paradisiacal island, at a beach party under the moon, “Night On Fire” didn’t sound so bad.

The next single, “So Happy I Could Die”, gave me some hope. Happy rock, colorful (literally, once you see the video…), sleazy all the way. Despite copying the “oh yeah” in the chorus from Mötley Crüe’s “Kickstart My Heart”, the song is good enough that one can forgive them for such “plagiarism”. We can even see it as a tribute to the legendary band, although the real homage comes in the form of “I Love Heavy Metal”. Wait, heavy metal?! The idea of this song is actually super cool. They gathered song-titles of several bands they love for the verses, and then the pre-chorus was made of the bands’ names themselves. The thing is that listening to Olli Herman saying he “loves heavy metal, can’t get enough, can’t get enough” while referring to Poison, Bon Jovi, Warrant, Winger, Aerosmith, Skid Row, Guns N’ Roses, Kiss, W.A.S.P. and so on… well, that’s a “bit” of a stretch. Okay, he mentions Iron Maiden and Judas Priest (Ozzy too, but he also had his own glam era), but as brilliant heavy metal bands as those are, they still don’t justify the title for this song. Plus, talking about the unconditional love for heavy metal at such a lazy cheesy rhythm… Joan Jett already took “I Love Rock’N’Roll” for herself, but it would still be a more suitable title. Terminologies apart, though, and precisely for featuring so many well-known names, the song ends up being quite fun to sing along and pleasant to listen to.

They seem somewhat obsessed with metal, as there’s another track, called “Metal Ass”. But I must say that this one is justified, the riffs and solo showing you why they mentioned Judas Priest in that other song. I believe it’s the heaviest track they’ve ever written.

After the heaviest, it makes sense that now I speak of the exact opposite: the mandatory ballads. “Edge Of Our Dreams” sounds familiar, although I can’t recall where from. Nevertheless, I like it pretty much. It’s not too slow, soft being a more accurate word, with a dreamlike vibe to match the lyrics. Now “Hot Rain”, that’s the typical heartbreaking love song, whose melody will pull out tears from a rock. Whether that’s a good or a bad thing, it depends on each one’s personal taste. For me, it’s a bit too much.

And then, the in-betweens. “Bad Lovin’” kicks off with some rocky riffs, the drum beats in the middle of the chorus are pretty sharp, as well as the guitar solo. But the main structure is undoubtedly pop, too pop even for a glam rock band – which doesn’t mean that you won’t like it. Because “Favorite Flavor” is glam through and through, and yet it’s the weakest song in “Spirit”, in a “too-much-of-the-same” kind of way. Unlike “Sex, Drugs & Reckless Love”, whose Kiss“Lick It Up”-influenced rhythm section in an otherwise pop rock song makes all the difference, not to mention the catchier chorus. As for “Dying To Live” and “Runaway Love”… yeah, easy-going pop songs. And “Die Hard”, although only who gets the UK release of the album is supposed to hear it. As for a worldwide bonus track, or at least countries where Spotify is available, there’s “Gone With A Smile”, with a main riff twin to the one Byan Adams wrote for “Run To You”.

So why the mixed feelings, you wonder. With so many “buts”, even in the best songs, I shouldn’t hesitate in rating “Spirit” as average. I would, if we were looking at it from a strict rock point of view. But this is Reckless Love. The flamboyant adjective they’re so fond of isn’t just about their looks, but their sound as well. And under that perspective, the abundance of mainstream melodies entwined with glam & sleaze elements becomes an asset. Under that perspective, this album is awesome.

Jettblack announce release date for compilation album Black Gold

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 15th July 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

UK rockers Jettblack have announced 19th August as the release date for their new compilation album, titled Black Gold. The 13 track collection will includes covers of three hard rock anthems (originally recorded by Motorhead, Heart and AC/DC), as well as a brand new song, Red Horizon and to top it all off guest appearances from members of Deep Purple and Black Star Riders/Thin Lizzy. And if that’s not enough, the new Jettblack single – a revised version of Black Gold, a track from latest Jettblack studio album, Raining Rock, out now via Spinefarm, will be featured on the compilation. Will Stapleman, vocalist and guitarist for Jettblack, commented:

We’re very happy to have a lot of our bonus material finally released on a physical format, but we didn’t want this album to be all about the past – which is why we recorded the three new tracks. We loved working on the Heart and Motorhead covers, but it was especially satisfying to get a version of Red Horizon down on tape. We’ve had this song since the Raining Rock album, and you’ll hear the full version on JB studio album number three – the version here is acoustic, but I think it shows what a big song for us this will be…

Black Gold track listing:

1) ‘Black Gold’ (feat. Damon Johnson) – new edited version.
2) ‘Feel The Love’ (feat. Ian Paice of Deep Purple) – from the ‘Raining Rock’ sessions, previously digital only.
3) ‘Weapon’ – from the ‘Raining Rock’ sessions.
4) ‘Fade Away’ – from the ‘Get Your Hands Dirty’ sessions.
5) ‘Let Me Put My Love Into You’ (AC/DC cover) – previously only available on a cover-mounted CD.
6) ‘Red Horizon’ (acoustic) – previously unreleased.
7) ‘Barracuda’ (Heart cover) – previously unreleased.
8) ‘Name In Vain’ (Motorhead cover) – previously unreleased.
9) ‘War Between Us’ (acoustic) – previously digital only.
10) ‘Not Even Love’ (acoustic) – previously digital only.
11) ‘Sunshine’ (acoustic) – previously digital only.
12) ‘Prison Of Love’ (acoustic) – previously digital only.
13) ‘Black Gold’ – full album version.

The new edit of Black Gold has been released today as a single via Spinefarm Records.

On the live front, Jettblack have just embarked on a string of UK festival appearances; these include Scar Fest in Stoke-On-Trent on 25th August.

Chthonic announce 24 hour stream of Bú-Tik via Soundcloud

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 4th June 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Taiwan’s premier metal unit, Chthonic have announced a 24-hour stream of their seventh studio album, Bú-Tik, via Soundcloud.com to celebrate its release in the UK. Listen to Bú-Tik in full here, at this location.

Recorded at Sweden’s Sweetspot Studio by producer Rickard Bengtson, who also worked on 2011’s Takasago Army, Bú-Tik sees the band returning to the scene with their signature brand of symphonic ‘oriental metal’, as they choose to define it; as usual, the musicians continue on their mission to build awareness of the myths of Taiwan and the tragic events in their country’s history.

Bú-Tik – based around the story of the 228 Massacre, the Bú-Tik Palace and the Mirror Of Retribution – highlights “righteous violence and justifiable defence”; once more, it takes the listener deep into the folklore & history of exotic Taiwan. Chthonic’s bassist and spokesperson, Doris Yeh comments:

We are very proud to present Bú-Tik to the world; it talks about self-defence, righteous violence and the armed spirits! With this album, we have pushed ourselves to achieve new heights – heights we’ve never imagined before! We are leading metal fans to the next episode of Chthonic!

Track listing is as follows:

01. Arising Armament (intro)
02. Supreme Pain For The Tyrant
03. Sail Into The Sunset’s Fire
04. Next Republic
05. Rage Of My Sword
06. Between Silence And Death
07. Resurrection Pyre
08. Set Fire To The Island
09. Defenders Of Bu-tik Palace
10. Undying Rearmament (Outro)

Bú-Tik is available in both physical and digital formats now, via Spinefarm Records.

On the front of live performances, Chthonic are confirmed to play on the Pepsi Max Stage on Saturday 15th June at the Download Festival 2013, set to take place over the weekend of June 14th – 16th at its historical stamping ground of Donington Park. Chthonic last appeared at Download in 2011, but for this follow-up show they are returning in greater numbers, the plan being to utilise the skills of the oriental orchestra to help bring their brand of symphonic oriental metal to the UK masses: Doris states:

This is the first time we’ll have played with the orchestra outside of Taiwan. We’re really hoping to present a show that people will be talking about for some time to come…

Tickets for Download 2013 are available at this location. Plans are currently being discussed for an autumn UK tour.

Reckless Love release video for latest single Night On Fire, taken from upcoming untitled third album

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 29th April 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

The flamboyant Finnish rockers Reckless Love, who burst spectacularly onto the UK scene in 2010, have released their brand new single and video, Night On Fire, today via Spinefarm Records. The song is taken from their upcoming third studio album (the title is yet to be revealed), which sees the four pushing their signature blend of sleaze-rock riffs and huge commercial choruses to even greater heights. Frontman Olli Herman says:

Night On Fire is the pure essence of Reckless Love; a deceitfully catchy tune with an awesome big sing-along chorus and a fierce guitar solo. It embodies all of our biggest ’80s influences from KISS and Van Halen to Def Leppard and Europe. Night On Fire also has this exotic Shakira-esque groove to it, which’ll make you dance, or if dancing ain’t your cup of tea, nod your head until you break your neck!

The video for Night On Fire was shot over consecutive nights in the Canary Islands following a full week in Las Palmas, “lazing around, taking it easy, enjoying cold beer and hot weather,” according to Olli – it’s alright for some Production credits include award-winning film director Marko Mäkilaakso (known for both his music videos and his feature-length films, such as Deadly Descent, War Of The Dead, etc.), cinematographer Juge Heikkilä, and producer Teemu Virta for Twisted Films Inc. Frontman Olli continues:

We all have active and vivid imaginations, but we wanted to keep things pretty simple for the video – we’re portrayed as a demonic product of Baron Samedi, a spirit god of Haitian Voodoo. This is the ‘dark side’ of Reckless Love… Hahaha.

A full UK headline tour is scheduled for the autumn of 2013, with selected festival appearances also being discussed. Previously, Reckless Love have appeared at the Download and Firefest events over here in the UK, as well as headlining tours, playing London residencies, touring with Black Veil Brides and releasing such irresistible singles and videos such as Beautiful Bomb, Romance and Hot.

Turbogeist release video for new single, Mermaid’s Revenge

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 25th April 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

London-based rockers, Turbogeist, have released the video for current single, Mermaid’s Revenge – a number from their 5-track EP, Ancient Secrets, available now via Spinefarm Records. Having already received airplay from Radio One’s Dan P. Carter and Zane Lowe, as well as XFM DJ Ian Camfield, Turbogeist are causing a well-deserved stir within the underground. The video can be viewed below.

Turbogeist guitarist and vocalist, Luis Felber comments:

Being a youth in the ’90s, with Brit Pop, Grunge, Hip Hop and great rock bands emerging on the radio and music television, we were spoilt for choice. Nowadays, everything seems too polished. However, if you look beyond the void of Mercury Awards and Coldplay B-sides, there are great underground scenes/bands emerging…

The video for Mermaid’s Revenge, filmed in London, was directed by Michael McCool and animated by Nicos Livesey and Nick Dunn of the This Is It collective.  Nick Dunn worked his wizardry on the previous Turbogiest video, Alien Girl. Luis also stated:

In this new video, we had a lot more fun. We got super-involved in the whole development process… It’s really more like a mini-movie. I mean, it’s no Scorsese’s ‘Bad’, but Michael McCool is seriously on his way to being one of the greats… The ’90s and the noughties brought us Britney in school uniform and Backstreet Boys in space. The art of the video needs to be taken back to the ’80s, to raw creativity and fun.

On the live front, Turbogeist will be appearing at this year’s Takedown Festival alongside acts such as Don Broco, While She Sleeps and The Blackout; the festival takes place at Southampton University on May 1st. They have also been confirmed to play London’s Camden Rocks Festival on June 1st, which will see over 100 bands playing across 12 venues in the capital’s home of rock ‘n’ roll.

Tickets are available at the following locations:

Takedown Festival

Camden Rocks

The ‘Ancient Secrets’ EP features 4 brand new Turbogeist tracks, as well as a cover of ‘Up Front’ by influential US punk band, The Wipers.  Sleeve art was provided by British artist Nicholas Rea and depicts a man in ‘supernatural woods’, originally hand-painted on ceramic tiles. The debut Turbogeist album is already in the can, and will follow later in 2013, once again through Spinefarm.

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 24th April 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

British modern hard rockers Voodoo Six are now set to release new studio album, Songs To Invade Countries To, having penned a worldwide deal with Spinefarm Records.

The much-anticipated release will be available from May 27th, coinciding with the first date of the band’s European tour with UK metal legends Iron Maiden. The new album consists of 11 studio tracks produced by Tony Newton, mixed by Tony Newton &Pedro Ferreira (The Darkness, Enter Shikari, Therapy?) and mastered by Ade Emsley (Iron Maiden, British Lion). It follows Voodoo Six’s 2010 Fluke? outing, which was released through Classic Rock’s Powerage label and mixed by renowned studio engineer Mike Fraser (AC/DC, Aerosmith, Metallica). At some point, Fluke? will see an enhanced re-issue via Spinefarm

Songs To Invade Countries To track list is as follows:

1.Falling Knives
2.All That Glitters
3.Lead Me On
4.Sink Or Swim
5.You Don’t Know
6.Your Way
7.Sharp Sand
8.Stop
9.Brick Wall
10.Waiting In Line
11.Higher Ground

The band have gained a loyal following from their impressive portfolio of live activity, which has included several performances at Download, Sonisphere and Bloodstock, as well as touring with Adrenaline Mob, Edguy, Extreme, Michael Monroe and the legendary UFO.

Voodoo Six guitarist Chris Jones comments:

The album title was something that came about ages ago, but took on another dimension when we heard the news that we’d be going out with Iron Maiden on the ‘Maiden England’ tour. It’s about taking our music further afield, and into new territories. We can’t wait to play to overseas audiences on this tour!

Iron Maiden founder and bassist Steve Harris adds:

I’ve been keeping an eye on Voodoo Six for a while now, and they’ve produced a cracking new album with real promise. It’s great to support true British up ‘n’ coming talent such as theirs, and it will be a pleasure to have them out with us on tour.

Steve Harris isn’t the only advocate of the band.  After touring with Adrenaline Mob last summer, V6 caught the attention of original Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy, who has stated:

Voodoo Six are a great band with a bright future – cool guys, great players!

Songs To Invade Countries To is released worldwide via Spinefarm Records on May 27.

Chthonic announce release date for upcoming album, Bú-Tik

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 22nd April 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Taiwanese metal band, Chthonic, have confirmed June 3rd as the release date for their seventh studio album, Bú-Tik, via Spinefarm Records.

Recorded at Sweden’s Sweetspot Studio by producer Rickard Bengtson, who also worked on the band’s 2011 Takasago Army, Bú-Tik sees the band returning to the scene with their signature brand of symphonic “orient metal”, as they choose to define it; as usual, the musicians continue on their mission to build awareness of the myths of Taiwan and the tragic events in their country’s history.

Bú-Tik – which is based around the story of the 228 Massacre, the Bú-Tik Palace and the Mirror Of Retribution – highlights “righteous violence and justifiable defence”; once more, it takes the listener deep into the folklore and history of exotic Taiwan.

Bassist and band spokesperson, Doris Yeh, stated:

We are very proud to present Bú-Tik to the world; it talks about self-defence, righteous violence and the armed spirits! With this album, we have pushed ourselves to achieve new heights – heights we’ve never imagined before! We are leading metal fans to the next episode of Chthonic!

Track listing is as follows:

01. Arising Armament (intro)
02. Supreme Pain For The Tyrant
03. Sail Into The Sunset’s Fire
04. Next Republic
05. Rage Of My Sword
06. Between Silence And Death
07. Resurrection Pyre
08. Set Fire To The Island
09. Defenders Of Bu-Tik Palace
10. Undying Rearmament (Outro)

The first single, Defenders Of Bú-Tik Palace, will be made available digitally shortly via Spinefarm Records, with a very special video to follow. Doris explains:

For this clip, the first in a series of four, we decided to put ourselves through one month of martial arts training, to prepare ourselves properly. Finally, a couple of days ago, we filmed the video over a 24 hour period, and we are all now covered in bruises and completely exhausted… it’s not easy to go at it for such an extended period!

One the live front, Chthonic are confirmed to play on the Pepsi Max Stage on Saturday June 15th at Download Festival 2013, set to take place over the weekend of June 14th16th at its historical stamping ground of Donington Park.

Chthonic last appeared at Download in 2011, but for this follow-up show they are returning in greater numbers, the plan being to utilise the skills of the oriental orchestra. Doris commented:

This is the first time we’ll have played with the orchestra outside of Taiwan. We’re really hoping to present a show that people will be talking about for some time to come…

Tickets for Download 2013 are available at this location.

From Fuji Rock and Loud Park in Japan, through to Ozzfest in the US, Bloodstock and Download in the UK, and Wacken Open Air in Germany, Chthonic have already made their mark around the world, touring in over 30 countries, picking up awards (including the Golden Melody Award – the Taiwanese equivalent of a Grammy), featuring on magazine front covers, supporting political causes, releasing photo books, appearing in the charts and of course making powerful, unique music steeped in their own culture. Plans are currently being discussed for an autumn UK tour.

Kalmah set to release seventh studio album, Seventh Swamphony, in June

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 4th April 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Kalmah, the undisputed champions of ‘Swamp Metal’  (Editor: Swap Metal? Really?) return to the scene with new studio album, Seventh Swamphony, which is the heavily anticipated follow-up to 2010’s 12 Gauge release.

After 15 years together, with six full length albums under their collective belt, 2013 sees the Finnish musicians delivering album number seven – an eight-track release showcasing this Oulu outfit’s trademark frantic, yet melodic death metal style, tempered here by a new-found ‘epic mournfulness’.

Set to be released on June 17th 2013 via Spinefarm Records, Seventh Swamphony was recorded at Tico-Tico Studios in Kemi, Finland, and features a selection of brand new tracks, mixed and mastered at Sweden’s Fascination Street Studios by Jens Bogren (Opeth, Soilwork,Paradise Lost, etc.)

Antti Kokko, Kalmah‘s lead guitarist, comments "This album marks a milestone in our careers. We have a new keyboard player, which has given a fresh edge to the music, and we are of course very satisfied with the new material. That is why we wanted to give the songs the best possible chance without compromise; we feel very lucky and privileged to have worked with Jens Bogren."

Kalmah (which translate to From The Grave in Karelian) will play Dark River Festival in Finland this summer with more festival and UK touring plans to be announced.

Turbogeist stream new EP via SoundCloud

Posted in Featured, News with tags , , , , , on 11th March 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

London’s up-and-coming rockers, Turbogeist, release their brand new 5-track EP, Ancient Secrets, today via Spinefarm Records.

In celebration of the release, Ancient Secrets will be available to stream via SoundCloud for a limited time. To stream the EP, go to this location.

Vocalist and guitarist Jimmy  comments: Ancient Secrets pertains to our obsession with all things fantastical and cryptic. It’s an abstract title, but these are abstract times. We didn’t wanna make an oi oi punk angst record, although that’s how we started out. We wanted to make something more tongue-in-cheek, more weird. We were always turned on by a splatter-gun of influences. We didn’t want to make a punk or hardcore or glam or thrash record; we didn’t wanna make anything that felt sonically linear. If the EP were a drug it would probably be acid, as it could go in a few directions. It could be scary, but it could also make you laugh or cry, or make you realise that nothing is real and we are all just a collection of atoms moving very fast to no discernible end.”

Other guitarist and vocalist Luis adds: “Being a youth in the ’90s, with Brit Pop, Grunge, Hip Hop and great rock bands emerging on the radio and music television, we were spoilt for choice. Nowadays, everything seems too polished. However, if you look beyond the void of Mercury Awards and Coldplay B-sides, there are great underground scenes/bands emerging…”

The debut Turbogeist album is already in the can, and will follow later in 2013, once again through Spinefarm.
