40 Watt Sun announce new album plans

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on 29th March 2014 by Nico Solheim-Davidson

40 Watt Sun have confirmed that writing for their next album – which will be the follow-up to their 2011 release The Inside Room – is now complete and that they have begun recording this month. Recording will take place in Wales throughout the spring and summer, and will be once again self-produced by the band. 40 Watt Sun have played a handful of intimate shows over the past six months, showcasing tracks that will appear on the new album, as well as playing older favourites. Vocalist and guitarist, Patrick Walker, commented:

The tracks for this album have been written over the course of the past twelve months. Though a natural progression from the last record, this time the music is more texturally varied and I’ve tried to allow an even greater spontaneity to the songwriting.

40 Watt Sun will also be playing the following events in April:

10th April – Roadburn Festival, Het Patronaat – Tilburg, NL
11th April – Doom Over Leipzig – Leipzig, DE
12th April – Decadence Club – Ghent, BE

Nothing confirm European debut at Roadburn Festival

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , on 7th March 2014 by Nico Solheim-Davidson

Continuing on from the release of their debut album, Guilty Of Everything, earlier this week, Philadelphia four piece Nothing have confirmed their debut European performance at the legendary Roadburn Festival in Holland. The festival will be hosted in Tilburg, Holland next month.

Guilty of Everything has been gaining recognition and acclaim in both the US and Europe, with OOR magazine in the Netherlands hailing the record as “…the album My Bloody Valentine should have written,” whilst Rock-A-Rolla in the UK describe it as “a remarkably dense and heavy yet gentle and elegant shoegazey dream pop opus“. Roadburn.com said that the album was “a winning mix of ethereal, aurorean shoegaze coupled with infectious riffs and hooks” – making the festival the ideal platform for their European debut.

Nothing will be joining an eclectic mix of artists at Roadburn, ranging from Candlemass through to Loop. They will be playing alongside fellow Relapse Records artists; -(16)-, ASG, Indian, Inter Arma, Locrian, Lord Dying, Windhand, and True Widow. Nothing will perform on Thursday 10th April at Het Patronaat. Roadburn Festival takes place 10th – 13th April at the 013 venue and Patronaat in Tilburg, Netherlands. The festival is sold out, however tickets to the Afterburner event on 13th April are still available. More information can be found at this location.

At the time of recording, singer/guitar player DH Phillips commented:

I’ve always considered us a simple band but these songs seem even more boiled down, I’d say the pace is a little different as well. Things are a bit more upbeat.

Mikael Åkerfeldt to curate Roadburn Festival 2014

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 28th August 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson

Opeth‘s Mikael Åkerfeld has agreed to curate the Roadburn Festival 2014 on Friday 14th April at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. This means that he will personally select bands for his special event and play a headline show with Opeth.

Opeth‘s body of work is highly respected by the Roadburn crowd, which has made Mikael an ideal choice to carry on the tradition that started in 2008 with David Tibet (Current 93) and has continued with the likes of NeurosisTom G. WarriorSunn 0)))Voivod and Jus Oborn (Electric Wizard). Mikael commented:

It’s with great honour that I accepted the invitation to be the curator for the 2014 Roadburn Festival. I’m pretty damn far from being a professional booker/promoter, and I’ve never been part in choosing bands for an event apart from bands that Opeth has toured with. So this is a first for me, but I have to say I’m very excited.

I’ve reached out to a handful of my favourite bands from the past and present. As of now it looks like it will be an amazing musical event. Still brainstorming about possible bands for this glorious festival but I already know that I’m going to be like a kid at Christmas. It will be amazing! Plain and simple. Obviously Opeth will perform as well, but to be quite honest with you, our own performance doesn’t get me nearly as excited as the thought of experiencing the bands that have shown interest. It will be remarkable and memorable. A celebration, bitches!

Candlemass premier Under The Oak from Roadburn Festival live album

Posted in Featured, News with tags , , , , , , , on 28th May 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson

Today, doom legends Candlemass premiere the new live track Under the Oak at the Roadburn Festival website. The track hails from Candlemass‘ vinyl-only Epicus Doomicus Metallicus – Live at Roadburn 2011 album, set for international release on June 14th through Svart Records. Candlemass‘ debut album Epicus Doomicus Metallicus is a genre-defining classic if there ever was one – the starting point of modern epic doom metal, even. In 2010 and 2011 Candlemass invited the original Epicus vocalist Johan Längqvist back into the fold for a few select shows celebrating the album’s 25th birthday. This vinyl-only release captures the band performing Epicus Doomicus Metallicus album live at the sold-out Roadburn Festival in Holland, April 2011. Mixed from a professional 32-track recording and mastered vinyl under the supervision of the band’s founder and mainman Leif Edling, this is the ultimate live version of the classic. CandlemassUnder the Oak (live) can be heard in its entirety here, at this location.

The Svart release has the album spread over three sides of vinyl and an etching on side D. The two LPs are wrapped in a gatefold jacket, and the set is available on black or white vinyl. Both versions are limited to 400. Leif Edling comments:

No volcano could stop us this time to perform the Epicus album at the Roadburn festival in Holland. It was a very special day, filled with great music, incredible fans, and a band that had a lot of fun doing this! After 25 years original, Epicus singer Johan Längqvist is onstage with us to perform something that people say is one of the doom metal classics. And I think we did a pretty good job there at Roadburn. We played well, and the show was a total success! So here it is, Candlemass live at the Roadburn festival… As it was, no overdubs… Recorded on 32 channels… A fine slice of legendary doom released on big, fat, double-packed vinyl!
