Marius Tilly – Nebula Rising

Marius Tilly
Nebula Rising
Released 22nd April 2016
Alternative Rock
Released via M.I.G.-Music GmbH

‘Nebula Rising’ is the third album from the German blues rock artist Marius Tilly. His music has been compared to bands such as Robert Plant and Rival Sons. This is a concept album about the universe and outer space. Marius Tilly cites Douglas Adams’s classic science fiction novel ‘The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy’ and more specifically states that: “The lyrics are a glance on our world from the outer space.”

Kicking off the album is Dinosaur – an uplifting piece of guitar-driven rock that makes you want to get up and dance along to the catchy chorus. Marius has a very distinctive voice which seems to be perfectly suited for both the blues and rock styles. Take Colder Below for example, his vocals adopt a ballad-like, sombre, bluesy tone to match the slower pace and melancholic sound of the guitars. At the opposite end of the spectrum you get the ‘rocking’ and somewhat more cheerful-sounding songs such as Solar Woman – another tune that I could see myself dancing to if I heard it playing at some rock club or bar.

The space theme continues with song titles such as Orion and Revel outer Space. Orion caught my attention due the slightly progressive-sounding instrumental in the second half of the song. Luckily it’s not long until the guitars pick up the pace and the vocals re-emerge marking the return to the album’s predominant style – alternative rock. Slender Man is a bit of an oddity, being the only song on here to feature some distortion in the guitars and the vocals at the start.

In summary, this album offers a variety of different styles all squeezed inside the “alternative rock” pigeonhole. There’s elements of the blues, classic rock and even progressive rock. I enjoyed certain songs more than others but overall the only consistent feature they all have in common is the vocals. There’s too many changes and inconsistencies in the style and structure for me to appreciate the album as a whole.

Rival Sons introduce new bassist Dave Beste

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 15th March 2014 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

After recently completely the work on their fourth studio album at LCS Studios in Nashville, Rival Sons have announced the addiiton to their line-up of their new bassist Dave Beste. Originally from Lincoln, Nebraska, Dave Beste moved to Los Angeles in 2000 to pursue music professionally, and has previously performed with the likes of Maroon 5 and Rocco Deluca And The Burden among others.  Beste has been touring with Rival Sons since last August following the departure of Robin Everhart, and plays on the band’s new album, due to be released this summer on Earache Records. Rival Sons frontman Jay Buchanan comments:

Personnel change in a band this tight can be a very worried thing.  Suddenly, you have to reprogram yourself from hearing and doing things in a familiar way in order to move forward, sink into and appreciate the new.  That ‘new’ is Dave Beste and he’s been completely killing it.  A close friend of mine for many years, Beste committed wholeheartedly to helping us out when we were in a tight spot and it didn’t take long to see that the fit couldn’t be more natural.  Also, I can’t wait for people to hear his playing on this new record because he delivered in spades.  So, now it is official.  Bonafide.  Dave Beste is a Rival Son.

New bassist Dave Beste also comments:

I’m thrilled to be joining Rival Sons as a member.  Getting to travel with your buddies and play in a band you already dig is a really special thing.  I couldn’t be happier they asked me to join them in this endeavor.

Rival Sons Canadian tour dates are as follow:

Oct. 24 – Toronto, ON – Phoenix Concert Theatre
Oct. 25 – Peterborough, ON – The Venue

Rival Sons announce 2013 tour dates in Europe & North America

Posted in Misc., News with tags , , on 8th January 2013 by izaforestspirit

Long Beach band Rival Sons kick 2013 off in style announcing dates in the USA, Canada and a return to Europe in March supporting their latest album Head Down.

Guitarist Scott Holiday comments:

“Now that we’ve made it through the holidays, filled our bellies with fruitcake and hot cocoa, opened all our presents and survived the Mayan calendar, we are ready to get back on the road. We’ll start the year with a few west coast US dates before moving into a Canadian tour. We may even catch a few more US dates on the way home. We also have UK and European dates on the books for March/April and of course, we’ll be back through for the summer festivals.

“Lots of plans in the works for 2013. Yep, it’s gonna be a busy year of nonstop rock’n’roll for us boys. Chinese calendar says its the ‘year of the Sons’, Jimmy Page likes our band, and my Grandma says she ‘hears us on the radio all the time’. If that’s not the planets aligning I dunno what is. Thanks Grandma.”

Rival Sons’ Keep On Swinging video premiers on VEVO

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 6th September 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Rival Sons have premiered their brand new music video for the track Keep On Swinging (#KeepOnSwinging) on the front page of VEVO.

Keep On Swinging is the first single from the band’s highly-anticipated new album, Head Down.  The band once again worked with director Greg Ephraim, who also shot the band’s music videos for Pressure and Time and All Over the Road.

Watch the video for Keep On Swinging now on VEVO’s front page carousel, or go directly to the video here.

For viewers in territories where VEVO is not available, the video is also available on YouTube or down below.

Rival Sons frontman Jay Buchanan comments “Shooting the video for Keep On Swinging was a pleasure.  Snake handling while wailing to a congregation in an old church is pretty high up there on the list of odd ways to pass the time.  Excuse me while I go to hell.

Rival Sons drummer Michael Miley adds “We recently returned from an exciting expedition; it was an adventure.  The Spirit was moving in that room.  We were playing in a church somewhere in the South (can’t reveal exact location) and had to convince this congregation we could be a musical catalyst for the casting out of demons; we succeeded.  We had to tame snakes with our music.  There was a swarm of ravens.  A girl that was baptized was on fire!  Crazy stuff!  And it was all caught on tape…  I’m sure it will be all over the interwebs soon.  Be on the lookout…

Head Down is due to be released on September 17th, and was recorded with Grammy-nominated producer Dave Cobb (Jamie Johnson, Shooter Jennings) and Grammy-winning engineer Vance Powell (Jack White, The White Stripes, Kings of Leon).

The album is available to pre-order now on CD, digi-sleeve CD and limited edition audiophile vinyl.  A special stencil edition hand-made by the band themselves is also available exclusively from the Earache Webstore.  Pre-order HEAD DOWN now in Europe here or in North America here.

Rival Sons Announce Euro Headline Tour

Posted in News with tags , , on 6th August 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Rival Sons have confirmed dates for a European headlining tour in support of their forthcoming new album, Head Down, which is due to be released on September 17th.  The tour kicks off on September 21st with nine shows in the UK, before moving on to continental Europe.

It follows a massively successful run through Europe earlier this summer, where the band performed numerous headlining club shows and huge rock festivals, as well as shows with the likes of Guns N’ Roses and Evanescence.

Rival Sons drummer Michael Miley comments: “Hey y’all!  It’s SOO good to be home, back in sunny Los Angeles… Getting some much needed rest after the Pressure & Time onslaught.  We had so much fun this summer – and the last year as well – in Europe and UK.  September 17 marks the new chapter for Rival Sons.  SOO looking forward to playing the new material for ya’s.  Our autumn tour dates will be announced SOON.  Thanks to all our awesome super fans.  See you soon!”

Rival Sons guitarist Scott Holiday adds: “This last tour was definitely our most successful yet.  All the headline shows were at capacity, support shows with kick-ass bands and the festivals were extremely great to us… Great slots, huge crowds, and got to connect and play with some of our favorite bands as well as meet a ton of new great ones.  Making lots of new friends.  We also got to play some unbelievable new places.  The whole tour was basically a complete onslaught of radicalness.  Looking forward to coming back through to all these places in support of the new record this next year.  People are always graciously telling us these amazing things like, ‘you guys have made me believe rock ‘n’ roll isn’t dead’… ‘You guys are the future of rock ‘n’ roll’ etc.  But I can wholeheartedly say, the reaction we got from the crowd on this tour reinstated my firm belief that people really want, even NEED rock ‘n’ roll in their lives.”

Rival Sons- Pressure & Time [2011]

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , on 16th August 2011 by izaforestspirit

Band: Rival Sons
Album: Pressure & Time
Release year: 2011
Genre: Blues Rock

‘Pressure & Time’ is the second album from Californian blues rockers Rival Sons. Now before I start I would like to say that I’m not really familiar with this kind of music and this is the first time that I’ve heard of the band. So for the next few minutes close your eyes and pretend that you’re in a small American diner. You’re still waiting for your quarter pounder/veggie burger and fries when a local band starts their set…

First up is a catchy little number ‘All Over the Road’. This is destined to be a crowd pleaser with a chorus anyone can sing along to and some good guitar riffs.  Same goes for the next track ‘Young Love’ which for some reason reminds me of Elvis mostly due to the vocal style.

Other notable tracks include the ‘Pressure and Time’ where the ‘rock n’ roll’ influence becomes is plain for all to see.  This has all the ingredients you need for a good ‘rock n’ roll’ song:  catchy guitar tunes complemented by an equally catchy chorus and good backing vocals. The same can be said for ‘Get Mine’ and ‘Save Me’.

Overall whilst it may not exactly be my style I do acknowledge the quality of this album. If Rival Sons turned up to play at my local pub I would probably stick around to watch.
