Tombs reveal title, artwork and tracklist for new album

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 29th March 2014 by Nico Davidson

Hailing from Brooklyn, in the state of New York, America, Tombs have confirmed Savage Gold as the title of the band’s third album to be released through Relapse Records. The album is set for release in June and the artwork (as seen above) and track listing have been revealed. The stunning artwork was created by renowned tattooist Thomas Hooper who has created the band’s previous album covers.

Savage Gold will be focusing on the awesome strength of Tombs‘ previous works into one brilliantly dark post-punk and extreme black-metal masterpiece. Recorded and produced by Hate Eternal‘s Erik Rutan (Cannibal Corpse, Goatwhore), Savage Gold both expands upon the moody post-punk foundations that Tombs‘ prior albums explored while also bringing out the band’s most traditionally metal moments yet. Once every few years a record comes along that sets a new benchmark for what can be done in heavy music. This is that moment and this is that record. The Savage Gold Track Listing is as follows:

1. Thanatos
2. Portraits
3. Seance
4. Echoes
5. Deathtripper
6. Edge of Darkness
7. Ashes
8. Legacy
9. Severed Lives
10. Spiral

Savage Gold is one the most anticipated underground metal album of 2014 as stated by Decibel Magazine, Revolver Magazine, Noisecreep and numerous other outlets. The band’s sophomore LP Path Of Totality unanimously topped 2011 end of the year metal lists (everyone from Decibel to Pitchfork to NPR, and more, dubbed it their top album of that year).

Culted stream new song from Oblique To All Paths

Posted in News with tags , , , , on 13th January 2014 by Nico Davidson

Black metal’s own doom hounds Culted are streaming their abysmal new track, Transmittal, via Pitchfork. The soul-suffocating anti-hymn is taken from the band’s album Oblique To All Paths, which is scheduled for release via Relapse Records later this month. The sorrow-laden track can be streamed at this location. Michael Klassen (guitar/bass/percussion/noise) comments on the track:

Transmittal is like the title suggests, a song intended to transmit an experience to the listener. Initially, it may lull the mind with hypnotic effects and repetition perhaps blurring vision and numbing consciousness. But it awakens with a scream to spark a flame and illuminate the world with fire, while scorching the wings of angels to finally reveal the collapse and coldness of space to the listener.

Oblique To All Paths will see official release on CD, 2xLP and digital formats via Relapse Records on 21st January in North America, 20th January in the UK/World, and 17th January in Germany/Benelux/Finland. For pre-orders, point your browser to this location. iTunes purchasers should go here.

Indian unveil new track and confirm Roadburn Festival appearance

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on 3rd January 2014 by Nico Davidson

In time to derail all those new year’s resolutions, blackened doom unit Indian have unveiled their new track Directional. The song is taken from the band;s upcoming album From All Purity, which is slated for release via Relapse Records later this month. The track can be listened to below.

In addition to the unveiling of their new track, Indian have also announced their first European date lof 2014 which will take place at Roadburn Festival on 12th April at the 013 venue in Tilburg, The Netherlands.

From All Purity will see its official release via Relapse Records on CD/LP/digital in North America on January 21st, 2014, Germany/Benelux/Finland on January 17th, and in the UK/World on January 20th. Preorder your copy of From All Purity via Relapse here.

Recorded at Electrical Audio and Soma Studios in Chicago with engineer/co-producer Sanford Parker (Minsk, Nachtmystium, Yob, Samothrace), the six-track From All Purity is a taunting exercise in auditory hate and despair; a physically and psychologically jarring collision of tar-black doom, sprawling waves of noise and scathing outbursts of pain. The Sleeping Shaman website commented of the record:

This is a very, very long way from most people’s definitions of purity, yet somehow it gets frighteningly close to pure, perfect torment in itself.

Forged in 2003, Indian’s debut EP, God Slave, was a self-released mission statement, welcoming the band into the world like young, kicking, screaming giants. Their first three full-lengths – The Unquiet Sky, Slights And Abuse, and The Sycophant, respectively – were all issued through Portland, Oregon-based metal imprint Seventh Rule Recordings. Unapologetically harsh and chest-cavingly heavy, each of these releases found the band gaining momentum and attracting followers, as well as performing shows with scene heavyweights such as Wolves in the Throne Room, Locrian, and Agalloch. By 2010, Indian had joined the Relapse family and spawned Guiltless.

Released in 2011 to outstanding reviews, the Chicagoist described the album as, “a musical journey into the mouth of teeth-rattling metal madness,” while Metal Hammer simply called it, “pretty much an essential album.” Fans were also impressed, gathering to soak up the band’s feverish rays of doom on tour across the country. Indian performed shows with High on Fire, Batillus, and Yob, translating their recorded sounds into a murky, devilish live spectacle.

Pig Destroyer recruit John Jarvis on bass

Posted in News with tags , , on 27th October 2013 by Pieni

 photo pd1_zpsf0e22e67.jpg

For the first time in their 16-tear-old career, grindcore masters Pig Destroyer have a bassist in their line-up: John Jarvis, cousin of the band’s drummer Adam Jarvis. According to guitarist and founding member Scott Hull, “For many years we haven’t had a bass player or second guitarist because, as JR once put it; “mo people, mo problems”. But a band is a living organism. Change is good. New blood. New energy.”

As for John, he states “It’s an honor to be a part of Pig Destroyer. I’m looking forward to making new music with the guys, as well as adding some “low end” to the older material live. After being able to see every incarnation of the band live in the past, I can honestly say that the guys are at the top of their game.”

John will make his live debut with Pig Destroyer precisely today, October 27th, at the Housecore Film Festival curated by Phillip Anselmo in Austin, Texas.

Their latest full-length, “Book Burner”, was released last year, but in 2013 they’ve also released an EP titled “Mass & Volume” as part of a charity effort to benefit the family of recently deceased Relapse Records employee Pat Egen. And last month, the single “The Octagonal Stairway” saw the light of day as part of the 2013 Adult Swim Singles Series.

 photo Pyrrhon_web_zps492d8287.jpg

Technical death metallers Pyrrhon have found a new home in Relapse Records. Singer Doug Moore is “thrilled and honored”: “When I was 15, I bought a copy of Relapse‘s Contaminated 5.0 sampler CD. Through it, I encountered Suffocation, Neurosis, Pig Destroyer, Human Remains, and countless other great bands for the first time. We are thrilled and honored to work with a label whose output has done so much to drive metal forward, and which has meant so much to all four of us over the years.”

The band is working on the follow-up of their debut “An Excellent Servant But A Terrible Master” (released in 2011 via Selfmadegod Records) and it’s expected to be out early next year.

Revocation – Revocation

Technical Death/Thrash Metal
Released via Relapse Records

 photo ImageProxy_zps7ab7f650.jpg

Naming their 4th album after themselves may not be very original, but apart from that, nothing seems to deserve being criticized in this “Revocation”. The thrash is more aggressive, the death is sharper, the prog is fiercer… every aspect is a notch or two more consistent.

Their best feature has always been the guitar work and the shredding-meets-technique of every track is remarkable – even if some riffs sound a bit familiar. Let me point a few highlights: “The Hive” made it to single, probably because it’s the most ferocious track in the album, the most straightforward in terms of brutality. The latter is less brisk in “Archfiend”, the guitars more polished, including a few moments of an acoustic one towards the end, leading to a fluid old school solo. “Fracked” has a very heavy metal initial rhythm, that eventually evolves to something more progressive and – once again in the solo – returns to a more classic and melodic tone. “Invidious” is the most exquisite and experimental track, blending everything that technical death is about with some banjo chords and gang vocals. There’s also a djent approach with the instrumental “Spastic”, and whoever gets the deluxe edition can also enjoy a very loyal cover of Metallica’s “Dyers Eve”. I confess I was hoping for a little revamp of the guitars, but there’s no significant changes there. But that’s just a cover, after all – what they had to do with their own songs to achieve a status of excellency, it was certainly done.
