Jordan Mancino (drums), Nick Hipa (guitar), Phil Sgrosso (guitar) and Josh Gilbert (bass) got together with Shane Blay (vocals) and Wovenwar was formed. Meaning that this is the band of As I Lay Dying musicians with the singer from Oh, Sleeper.

Over the past year, they’ve been working with Bill Stevenson (producer) and Colin Richardson (mixing) in what will be their self-titled debut album, scheduled for release late this summer. The first single, “All Rise”, is streaming already in their official website (hitting the digital webshops this Monday, May 19th), along with the first studio report. The latter features Mancino tracking his drumming parts: “It’s weird to think that I finished tracking drums for this Wovenwar record over 5 months ago. What an amazing and powerful experience it was being back in the studio creating and tracking with Nick, Phil, and Josh, and for the first time with Shane. Our past studio experiences together have always been done with the utmost efficiency and professionalism. With this Wovenwar record, we carried that same dedication of efficiency, but with more room and purpose to create while in the studio. This being the first time in the studio with Shane it was easy to tell that he shares the same dedication as the four us. Having Bill and Jason as producers, Daniel and Joseph as engineers, as well Colin and Carl for mixing, I couldn’t have imagined a more epic team of dudes to be part of this record. The history we all have together set the tone and comfort for this recording process, but what was accomplished was much more than I ever imagined. I am honored to be part of this record and honored to stand alongside my fellow band mates and production team as we begin this process of showing “All Rise” to the world.”

Nonpoint ink worldwide deal with Metal Blade Records

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on 27th March 2014 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Metal Blade Records have excitedly announced the signing of a worldwide deal with Nonpoint, thus meaning that Metal Blade will not only act as the label home for the band worldwide but as a partner to the band’s label in North America as well. Since their debut album, Statement, was unleashed on the world, Nonpoint have done nothing but prove, record after record, they can still dominate stages and radio airwaves everywhere. Their most current “self-titled” release was their most critically-acclaimed and landed them their two highest charting singles. Now, with their recent signing to label powerhouse, Metal Blade Records, they are making the biggest statement of their careers. Elias Soriano, the band’s vocalist, comments:

This is a dream situation for us. Just getting an offer from Metal Blade. We’ve always needed a team behind us outside of the U.S. It’s a great feeling knowing you now have the best team possible.

Drummer Robb Rivera comments:

We are excited to not only get THE worldwide label of labels to release our album outside of the US, but to be part of a family now that has pretty much set the bar for metal releases for 30 plus years. Needless to say, extremely excited to be able to get our music to the fans outside of the US through the team that helped launch Metallica.

Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records adds:

All of us at Metal Blade are happy to welcome Nonpoint to the Metal Blade family. We are excited to work with them and the bit of new material I heard sounds great!

Falconer finish writing new album and reveal album title

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on 16th December 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

The standard bearers of Sweden’s folk metal scene, Falconer, have recently completed writing their new album and have revealed its title. The eighth album, Black Moon Rising, is set for release in June 2014 will is the follow-up to the band’s 2011 album Armod. Guitarist Stefan Weinerhall explains:

The 8th album Black Moon Rising is finally written. This time we have even made some pre-productions of the material to test it out in advance. Some titles are: There’s a crow on the barrow, Age of runes, Scoundrel and the squire. We will enter the studio in January and release it in June 2014. As said before, all songs are in English this time after the last album’s one-off with only Swedish songs.

It’s for sure the most riff based album in many years and there are certainly some furious moments of brow-raising on the album! If I would sum up the material with two words they would be: Intensity and revitalization.

We will keep it quite basic with no guest musicians and almost no keyboards to keep it raw, natural and unpretentious. Can’t wait to enter the studio and put the finishing touches on the songs!

Finnish heroic metallers Ensiferum have spent the past eighteen years honing the steel of their folk-infused battle metal auditory attack. Their albums are further bolstered by a live show that has become one of the most entertaining in all of metal. Proof of Ensiferum‘s status as one of the most vital bands in modern metal was made apparent through their headlining slot on this year’s Paganfest USA tour. To further spread the band’s music to a worldwide audience, Ensiferum has forged an alliance of epic proportions with Metal Blade Records. The band inked the deal with Metal Blade CEO Brian Slagel during the Paganfest USA tour, and all parties are enthusiastic about new music and new possibilities.

Bassist and backing vocalist Sami Hinkka comments:

Gypsyhawk debut new song, “The Fields”

Posted in News with tags , , , , on 14th August 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Gypsyhawk unveil a brand new song from their upcoming album, Revelry & Resilience. The Fields, which is the second track on the album, as described by Eric Harris and Andrew Packer in the band’s track breakdown videos here, is about a topic in which the band is very interested: quantum physics. The Fields is streaming now here.

Revisiting the electrifying sounds of bullshit-free 70s rock, Gypsyhawk are a breath of fresh air compared to the endless onslaught of breakdown-obsessed bands cluttering up heavy music. Marinating their wares in whiskey and weed, they hurl out blistering riffs and irresistible hooks and grooves, doing their damnedest to ensure that everyone at their shows is having as much fun as they are. With Revelry & Resilience, their second full-length and Metal Blade debut, this vibe bleeds from the speakers from start to finish, determinedly putting a smile on your face and compelling you to throw your hair around, no matter how much or how little you might have. “It’s music for girls to shake their asses to and dudes to bang their heads,” states vocalist/bassist Eric Harris. “It’s good-time rock and roll, and we don’t take ourselves too seriously, but at the same time we’re not one-dimensional ‘yeah-dude-let’s-party-all-the-fucking-time!’ guys, and I like to think there’s something for everyone in our music.”

3 Inches Of Blood & Goatwhore w/Support @ The Moho, Manchester

Posted in Gig, Live with tags , , , , on 25th May 2012 by vmteam

Goatwhore, 3 Inches of Blood, Angelus Arpartriad & Havok
Moho, Manchester, United Kingdom
9th May 2012

Moho Live in Manchester is a venue which gets mixed results and after finding out that this gig would be here I was apprehensive. They can be very hit and miss with sound and the room itself is awkwardly shaped meaning short people such as myself can often miss out. However, tonight the crowd is a small and friendly affair in which I can navigate myself to a good vantage point easily.

The evening starts with the energetic Havok, looking like they’ve just rolled out of the Bay area of San Francisco circa 1985. And despite the giant gothic entrance music (which is rather jarring after listening to what comes next), they are pure and utter thrash. There are plenty of elements that sound like other trash bands, for example, you can’t help but think of Tom Araya when vocalist David Sanchez screams and there is a good measure of Testement thrown in there. But these are certainly not bad things. Havok are strong and entertaining, just watching the passion from the small audience is proof of that.

What stands out strongly with Spain’s Angelus Arpartriad is the fantastic drumming. Victor Valera’s choice of rhythm and style elevates their standard clean thrash to another level. Once again, the enthusiastic crowd are enjoying every minute of this set and the first circle pits of the evening begin. Angelus Apartriad and highly enjoyable and compliment Havok’s dirtier thrash with their own melodic and well written style.

Now Goatwhore is the band I was looking forward to. “Blood for the Master”, their most recent album was simply excellent and bridged the black and death elements of their music even further. Vocalist Ben Falgoust prowls the stage as if looking for someone to tear to shreds. And the music itself does just that. It is blistering and brutal and everything you could possible want in Blackened Death metal. The set doesn’t let up either, with very few gaps between songs, the sounds crash through even more powerfully. The new songs work well with older tracks and all of the executed tightly and efficiently by a band getting stronger and stronger.

Canada’s 3 Inches of Blood are a fun band, their cocktail of power and thrash is somewhat akin to Manowar and are enjoyable to watch. 3 Inches of Blood are very different from the previous three bands but they pull out a strong set even if the songs occasionally blend into one another. The audience that is left are as energetic as they were for previous bands, if not more so. The warrior imagery and calling to arms of the metal brotherhood are a lot of fun and are played very well this evening. Having admittedly not known much of 3 Inches of Blood tonight I find that I am impressed and am looking forward to seeking out more material from these guys.

The sound tonight has been much better than expected and the bands even more so. The metal community is known for its tight-knit camaraderie and this was definitely seen tonight. The atmosphere was warm and friendly and the bands were all extremely strong and enjoyable. If only all gigs were as enjoyable.

Charred Walls Of The Damned debut new video

Posted in News with tags , , , , on 19th March 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Richard Christy of Charred Walls of the Damned has been teasing us all with hints at a new video since November 2011, when the trailer was first released. Zerospan was directed and edited by Mike Schiff, who on Charred Wall’s previous ‘Ghost Town’ video, and Sean McEwen (Albino Farm) with special effects/make up by Brian Spears and Pete Gerner from G and S Effects (Stakeland). The lead actor in the video is Bryan Haeffele.

Richard Christy elaborates on the video’s concept:
I’m so excited that fans will finally be able to see the “Zerospan” video after many months of hard work! For fans of horror like myself, this video is the perfect mix of technological horror and all out brutality. The “Zerospan” video is like a mini horror film and the story follows the lyrical subject matter perfectly and creates a haunting vision of a man absorbed by the world’s ever growing technology. What it comes down to, though, is that it’s pretty much just a kick ass heavy metal video! Big thanks to Mike, Sean, Brian, Pete, Bryan, Metal Blade, and everyone who helped make this video awesome!

Zerospan can be viewed here. It’s apparently not for the squeamish or little kids, so you have been warned. Of course, you can go ahead and watch it anyway. We won’t tell.
