Katatonia – Dethroned And Uncrowned

Posted in Review with tags , , , , , on 9th August 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Katatonia
Dethroned And Uncrowned
Released 9th September
Ambient/Atmospheric
Released via Peaceville Records

Kings of the Swedish metal scene, Katatonia have been regarded by many as the forerunners of doom with last year seeing the release of the band’s ninth studio album Dead End Kings, which was praised throughout the metal community. A year on and Katatonia are ready to release a new and redefined version of their ninth album: Dethroned And Uncrowned.

The dreary vocal lines and misery-soaked pianos begin The Parting which is made by entrancing by the rainfall of acoustic guitars, gently easing their way through the song. The subtle orchestrated passages add to the strength of the emotion that flows throughout the track. The One You Are Looking For Is Not Here features a hypnotic vocal melody that glides with a certain mystique and elegance alongside the haunting pianos and tides of acoustic guitars. The piano sections in Hypnone are truly spine-chilling,  whereas as the guitars add an element of warmth to the song which is countered by the could vocals.

The Racing Heart is a slow, emotive song displaying the staunch use of vocals clearly, mixing them almost breathtakingly with the orchestrated sections and guitars. Buildings and Leech sail down similar routes, over subtle waves of misery and other emotion. The vocals on Ambitions sound colourless compared to the other tracks but this adds to the forlorn sound of the guitars and piano. The destitute soundings of Undo You show a change in the album whilst staying in the same vein of the album as well, something that is carried on by Lethean.

First Prayer sound eerily upbeat when played against the rest of the album but there is still that twang of despair that screams through the guitars and the album comes to its dreary finish with Dead Letters, which like the preceding track, is more upbeat in comparison to the other songs. The vocals prove to be at their most prominent on this final track, injecting new life into the album.

Dethroned And Uncrowned creates an atmospheric yet dark tranquillity, allowing for ambiance to create and set new moods and stir new emotions. It’s an interesting change in direction for Katatonia but one that have no difficulty with following and no that has breathed new life into their sound.

iwrestledabearonce reveal details for third studio

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on 10th June 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Los Angeles based experimental-heavy-rock band iwrestledabearonce have announced they will release their highly anticipated, third studio album Late For Nothing, on 12th August in Europe via Century Media Records.

Late For Nothing was self-produced, recorded, mixed and mastered by the band’s guitarist and programmer Steven Bradley at the band’s home studio in Los Angeles.  It also marks IWABO’s first record with their fiery new singer Courtney LaPlante who joined the band with only a day’s notice during last summer’s Vans Warped Tour.

Newly recharged with the addition of LaPlante, Bradley and cohorts John Ganey (guitar and programming), Mike “Rickshaw” Martin (bass) and Mikey Montgomery (drums) are set to keep their fans guessing with Late For Nothing. While the band’s signature, avant-garde style is well intact on the new album; their style has progressed immensely.  By far their boldest and most accessible release to date Late For Nothing rips and roars with blunt force intensity, incorporating their brain joggling breakdowns with a unique blend of electronics, jazzed-out time signatures and break neck riffage. Bradley affirms this:

The entire album came together as a result of us wanting to do something different. We didn’t want to make another weird IWABO album or whatever people were expecting.  We set out to make something different and better than anything we’ve ever released.  It’s a more evolved version of the band.  We explored new styles and genres as well—especially in terms of the more spacey, epic, and beautiful parts. It’s got the most melodic moments of our career as well as the heaviest.

Featuring the forthcoming, schizophrenic first single Thunder Chunky, Late For Nothing scales the summit of heavy rock and metal with twelve teeth gnashing tracks that find a happy medium between crushing metal and beautifully orchestrated melody. The album’s opener, Thunder Chunky, sets the tone for the album as they slash their way through songs like Letters To Stallone, that showcases LaPlante’s incredible balance of full throttle screams and melodic choruses, and Carnage Asada which features a guest solo from the legendary Steve Vai.

Huntress – Starbound Beast

Posted in Review with tags , , , , , , on 7th June 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Huntress
Starbound Beast
Released 28th June 2013
Traditional Metal/Banshee Metal
Released via Napalm Death

Since the release of Spell Eater in 2012, Huntress have been clawing their way to the top, beating each obstacle that gets in their way. Regarded as one of the hottest new acts of 2012, Huntress have a lot to live up to with Starbound Beast.

Opening up with Enter the Exosphere, a song that contains doom-and-thrashesque guitars, the album is properly kick started by Blood Sisters, a track that is fierce and unrelenting in the vocal work of frontwoman Jill Janus but feels to be lacking that same fierce energy in the instrumentation, for the most part, until Jill’s beast-like growls come into action. I Want To Fuck You To Death might sound like something a horny teenager might write but it’s more of a proper rock n roll anthem, co-written by the master of rock n roll, Lemmy Kilmister. The track is definitely one of Jill Janus’ stronger vocal pieces, and features some catchy riffs provided by the band’s guitarists Blake and Anthony.

The album contains a lot of catchy numbers fuelled by raw aggression and some by melodic guitar passages such as Destroy Your Life which belts out some very Iron Maiden sounding riffs in the beginning before becoming a heavier, melodic piece of metal whilst the title track Starbound Beast takes up the part of being a heavy hittin’ hard rock-inspired song. The drums, as performed by Carl Wierzbicky, feature prominently and loudly throughout the album, carrying the weight of the guitars with ease and providing a solid platform for the bass work of Ian Alden. Alpha Tauri finishes the album in a majestic manner, from blazing guitar sections to melodic riffs and acutely executed drumming, as well as an advance of Jill’s rapaciously hostile vocals.

Starbound Beast has everything a good metal album needs – good vocals, decent riffs and powerful rhythm sections plus memorable lyrics and a couple of tracks that will go down well at parties.

4.5/5

Jill Janus and the rest of Huntress hit UK shores next week for Download Festival 2013. They’ll be playing on the Red Bull Studio Stage on Sunday 16th June at 1:55PM.

DevilDriver announce details for new album and confirm release date

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 31st May 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

DevilDriver have confirmed that the title of their new album is Winter Kills – Well, I suppose those sounds a lot more metal than something like “Summer Kills”. The album will be released worldwide on August 27th via Napalm Records.

The band recorded the album in Florida at Audio Hammer Studios and vocals in Los Angeles, CA at Dez‘s home studio with Mark Lewis (Black Dahlia Murder, Whitechapel, All That Remains) handling production duties. The artwork for Winter Kills features a photograph by Dean Karr. The layout was done by Ryan Clark/Invisible Creature.

DevilDriver has worked with Lewis previously on Beast and The Last Kind Words and producer Mark Lewis‘s prolific leadership of the new school of metal has yet again helped DevilDriver deliver another epic heavy metal record.  This record melds what the band does best. In your face power as well as the California Groove sound the band pioneered.

DevilDriver has always been a band on a three-pronged mission: Work hard, rock harder, and kick as many asses as possible in the process. The band tours forever and has since its beginnings. Their live performances and circle pits are as legendary as their music. Dez comments on the new album:

This is by far DevilDriver’s most cohesive, powerful, groove laden record to date!

We delivered our signature California Groove sound alongside a Raw and Biting guitar tone, mixed it with massive hooks, added in thunderous drums to rethink, and reshape another different sounding unique piece of Rock-N-Roll! Cutting our own path is something to be proud of. DevilDriver has always and will forever be about thinking outside the box and delivering on something different from record to record, we cannot be assimilated into any scene or even genre of Metal and we will continue to do things our own way with a massive middle finger in the air to the status quo!

The band will be hitting the road worldwide in support of Winter Kills.  Touring as always will be a focal point for the band. The US can expect to see them this fall and winter with Europe and the rest of the globe coming in 2014 and beyond. Additional information on Winter Kills will be made available shortly.

Iwrestledabearonce nearing fully recording third studio album

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 26th April 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Experimental-metalcore act Iwrestledabearonce have announced they’re almost finished with tracking their forthcoming, third studio album, which is due out later this year.

Currently held-up in their band-compound and recording studio in Los Angeles, Iwrestledabearonce are pushing themselves musically like never before.  While known for their schizophrenic sound and unconventional song structure, Iwrestledabearonce is approaching their next record with a new focus and a determination to deliver an album that will surprise fans and entirely re-define who they are as a band. Guitarist Steven Bradley comments:

Well damn! After another two years of non-stop touring, some unexpected twists, and getting to visit some new and amazing places, we’re finally back in the studio working on full length number three! I’ve 100% NEVER been this excited about an IWABO album, because it feels like we’ve finally reigned in “our sound” even further and really hit a stride in terms of songwriting.  We’ve always admired bands like Deftones, Cynic, Thrice, Glassjaw, Mr. Bungle, Dredg, Cephalic Carnage, The Mars Volta, et cetera because they’ve never made the same album twice, and aren’t scared to keep evolving while still maintaining their signature styles. Obviously I’d never compare us to the greatness of those bands, but, in keeping with that mentality, we’ve progressed a bit more and put together our best collection of songs so far.

Bradley who is producing, engineering, mixing and mastering the album himself also adds:

The heavy parts are heavier and more interesting, the choruses are stronger, and the “weird twists” that people have come to expect in our music are way more thought-out than in the past and definitely hit harder than ever.  Long story short – we’re very excited about getting this album finished and released, and we hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Thanks for listening, and keep in touch with us on our facebook/twitter/etc where we will be posting frequent updates!

Iwrestledabearonce’s upcoming album will also be the debut of the band’s electrifying new scream-sing queen Courtney LaPlante, who joined the band with only a 24 hour notice in between shows on the band’s run with Warped Tour in 2012.  Her contributions to the new music have not only re-energized the band but have also allowed them to explore new growth as a cohesive unit. LaPlante comments:

Since the day I joined this band, I’ve been anticipating this album! I was pushed to the limit creatively and technically, and I’ve never been more proud of myself or my bandmates. We’ve been through alot this year, and this is the pay-off; the result of our experiences. Most importantly, I think IWABO fans both old and new will really enjoy these songs, and we can’t wait to play them live for you this summer!

Keep up with the band’s progress in the studio at this location.

Astaroth End Silence With New Album To Be Released Later This Month

Posted in News with tags , , , on 5th December 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Legendary Italian metal pioneers Astaroth have announced the release of their first ever full-length album through She Wolf Records on 21st December. The album, entitled The End Of Silence, was produced by the band’s bassist, Saverio ‘Shining’ Principini, and engineered by Michael Tacci (Metallica, Whitesnake) in Los Angeles. The End Of Silence marks the band’s first new output since their 1985 cult classic, The Long Loud Silence mini-LP, and reunites the original members Principini, guitarist Max Cipicchia and drummer Jan D’Amore. American born newcomer Ace Alexander will be handling vocal duties in place of original frontman Bob Cattani.

This is the album we were supposed to make after The Long Loud Silence but didn’t get the chance to for a myriad of reasons“, stated  bassist Principini. “All of the songs we’ve recorded for The End Of Silence were originally written in the mid 80’s as we prepared for our second record. Luckily, we found a bunch of old murky live tapes which helped reignite our collective memories. Even though it’s now a quarter century later and everything’s changed so much, we feel that these recordings very much embody the original Astaroth spirit. This has been a total labor of love for all of us and we can’t wait to share this with our old fans as well as hopefully make a few new ones along the way.

The End Of Silence tracklisting:

‘My Sleeping Beauty’
‘Dilemma’
‘Nero’s Fire’
‘Apocalypse In The Living Room’
‘The Siren Song’
‘Dreams Die First’
‘Stand Or Fall Together’
‘In Spite Of Destiny’
‘Mystic As Tarot’
‘Chainless Slaves’

Excerpts of all the songs are posted in streaming audio at this location.
