Delain reveal details of new studio album

Dutch symphonic rockers Delain have revealed the details and album art of their upcoming album The Human Contradiction, which will be the follow up to their 2012 release We Are The Others. The album art – as seen to the left – is a stunning visualisation which features Delain frontwoman Charlotte Wessels.

In their initial announcement on their Facebook page, moments ago, Delain stated that the new album will feature guest musicians. The tracklisting is as follows:

Sorronia announced as support to Tarja Turunen for six European dates

Hungary’s up-and-coming symphonic metallers Sorronia have been confirmed as support for six European shows for Tarja Turunen later this month. Tour dates are as follow:

Jan. 31st – Santana 27 – Bilbao, Spain
Feb. 1st – Salamandra 1 – Barcelona, Spain

Sorronia have released its first album, titled Words of Silence, on 28th October, 2013 via Bakerteam Records with world-wide distribution. The beautiful album artwork was handled by the talented artist Alexandra V Bach who also worked with acts like Kamelot and Adagio. The album was warmly welcomed by the audience and the press. The support role on Tarja’s upcoming European tour isn’t the first time that Sorronia have supported a well known act on the female-fronted scene as just recently they were on a shorter tour with the German symphonic metal powerhouse Xandria by visiting Spanish cities: Madrid, Valencia, Barcelona, Zaragoza.

ReVamp post series of trailers online

Wild Card; the second studio album from Dutch symphonic metal band ReVamp – who are fronted by former After Forever vocalist and current touring Nightwish vocalist Floor Jansen – is set for release on 26th August.

ReVamp recently posted a five minute trailer about the recording process of ReVamp. The trailer features album producer Joost Van Den BroekReVamp‘s drummer Mathias Landes, as well as keyboardist and co-songwriter Ruben Wijga and guitarist Jord Otto. The trailer can be viewed below.

Delain announce US tour dates with Kamelot

The good news just keep on coming for Delain fans around the globe. After announcing their Japanese tour, and their South American dates, Delain, who are proving to be the hottest band on the symphonic metal scene, have announced that they’ll be joining Kamelot on a full-blown North American tour. The band comments: “It has been way too long since our last tour with our friends from KAMELOT! We’re hugely looking forward to joining them on tour this fall and we’re hugely looking forward to meet YOU on our first ever full-blown US Tour. See you there, you don’t want to miss this!

Kamelot w/Support @ The HMV Forum, London

Usually when I go to gigs, the doors will open at 7pm and the first band will be on around 8pm – but not this gig. I walked in at 7:40pm after having been held up by the awful traffic through London (no surprise there, really), and I was shocked to find that I had actually missed Blackguard. Now, I’m not sure whose idea it was to put the first band on as soon as the doors opened, but it certainly was not a good one. I had heard good things about Blackguard, so I was actually looking forwards to seeing them. It would appear that I was not the only one to have missed the first band entirely as when asking members of the audience what they thought of them, most people said “I was in the pub”. However, the very few people who were lucky enough to have seen Blackguard said they were brilliant.

The second band on the bill was Triosphere, and it would appear that not too many people were bothered about them. The HMV Forum usually holds between 2,000 and 3,000 people. Tonight, there were maybe 200 people (and that isn’t a typo!). Never before in my life have I walked into a gig forty minutes after the doors opened and gone straight to the front row. I can promise you I am not exaggerating. Triosphere played well, but the emptiness of the room affected the sound drastically, causing too much reverb off of the walls. It sounded like we were in a cave. The crowd reaction wasn’t brilliant either, but that wasn’t the band’s fault as it’s hard to interact with an audience that’s barely there.

Next up was Xandria, who can only really be describes as diet-Nightwish. There were a few more people in the crowd by this point, but that didn’t mean the band played well. There was no definition in the guitar sound, which was incredibly disappointing. I would like to have blamed that on the emptiness of the room, but the previous band’s guitars had sounded superb, and there were less people then. The vocals were lacking too – some parts sounded like they were on a backing track and other parts were slightly out of key. Now, don’t get me wrong, I thought they tried very very hard, but they just weren’t that great. The crowd did, however, react fairly well to them.

The room filled up a little more whilst the stage crew put away the small drum kit, revealing Kamelot’s rather expansive kit. By this point, the venue was maybe a quarter full. Due to the lack of hot bodies jumping around, it was rather chilly in the venue and I was struggling to keep warm. I definitely think Kamelot were being just a little ambitious when booking such a large venue; had they been at the O2 Academy in Islington, it would have been practically sold out. Eventually, Kamelot came onto the stage, one member at a time. They opened with Rule The World, which would have been okay had the sound actually been decent. The show of lights was wonderful, but that really isn’t the point of a gig, is it? A few songs in, the sound improved and the crowd (small as they were) were making a lot of noise and singing along. Despite the blinding halogen lights flashing in their faces every millisecond, they seemed to be enjoying it. Seven songs in, they slowed it right down with a ballad off of their newest album, which really sounded like it should be in a Disney movie. Song For Jolee was hardly bearable, and to make it even worse, Tommy Karevik said (and I quote directly) “Let me see your lighters. I want to see all the screens from your mobile phones!”. Really? REALLY? After this catastrophe came the drum solo. Now, I do like watching a talented drummer show off his skills, but this was just taking the piss. This drum solo was more of a “watch how fast I can play my kick drums” than anything else, and to top it all off, Casey Grillo finished by bashing his cymbals with his fists. I was half hoping one of the cymbals would split and cut his hand open, as that would have been far more entertaining than what he was actually playing. The next few songs were okay, not to my personal taste, but the crowd enjoyed it. The penultimate ‘song’ was in fact a keyboard solo. This baffled me slightly as it really did not fit the mood. They finished with Forever, which was played well, and at the end the band just walked off. Chants of “KAMELOT” coaxed the band back on stage for their encore, which included a bass solo. This truly was a gig of firsts for me, because I have never seen anyone include a bass solo in a set, never mind an encore, and I had never seen anyone try to play a bass as if they were soloing on a guitar. The final song of the night was March of Mephisto, with a guest singer. I am still not sure who he was, but he seemed to add loads of energy to the band for their final song.

I had gone into this gig with a completely open mind, with no prejudice or bias towards any of the bands, but I was highly disappointed. The venue was too big for how many tickets had been sold, the sound was awful and the lights were, frankly, too bright. The last time I was at the HMV Forum, I was there to see Cannibal Corpse and Triptykon, and I could barely move.

Interview: Paul Ablaze [Blackguard]

After gaining popularity in not only their homeland of Canada but in America as well, Canadian power metal band Blackguard have been the supporting acts of many tours and never cease to blow away their fans with their live performances and epic albums. I got the chance to interview front man Paul Ablaze where he discusses touring life, Blackguard’s progression in their music, and the possibility of a headlining tour.

Blackguard is currently doing a European tour with Kamelot, Xandria, and Triosphere, and will be working on a new album sometime next year.

 

Pictures Of Pain – The Reckoning [2011]

Pictures Of Pain are described as a “melodic metal band with a unique sound”. They hail from grim and frostbitten lands of Norway, a country renowned for its history, mythology and black metal. Originally, forming in 2005, Pictures Of Pain have gone on to support bands such as Kamelot, Ensiferum and Leaves’ Eyes.

The introduction of “Betrayal” is certainly a unique one. Its calm, melodic and slightly progressive with sudden, short-lived sections of heaviness which are combined with black metal styled vocals. The track does turn aggressive. The vocals are different to how one would expect them to be to they sound to be a combination of both power metal and black metal styled vocals. There is a major use of clean vocals throughout the song as well, which helps keep the track interesting. The drums are precise and intelligently played. In some sections, the cleaner vocals do spoil the song a bit when they begin to scream in the old skool metal way.

”Far Beyond” begins in a similar fashion, only the introduction has more of a hypnotic yet eerie sound to it. The vocals are more clean on this track as well, whilst the guitars have lightened up a little bit but still bring that driving force of metal with them. The melodic riffs are also featured, which is a good thing for those who are fond of the more melodic sections. “Eternal Rage” is more slow paced to begin with, with a slight progressive feel to the drums. The vocals can be scarcely heard to begin with which is slightly disappointing, though they soon become more audible. They contrast brilliantly between harsh and bloodthirsty to clean and powerful-sounding. The slow, calming section towards the middle is certainly a refreshing sound from the onslaught of heavy, face-melting metal found in the majority of the first track. The guitar solo is well composed and a brilliant addition to “Eternal Rage”. The only issue as such with this one is the length, as the casual listener would possibly get bored after the first half of the track.

”Deviator” blasts its way next, with a an old skool meets modern metal sound. The vocals are reminiscent of Judas Priest and Venom. The riffs and drum work are very savage yet well composed at the same time. “Sign Of Times” is another slow-paced song yet just as epic as the tracks before it. The melodic riffs are just brilliant and the drums certainly bounce off the guitars very well. However, the clean vocals are lacking a fair bit compared to the music. The clean and eerie introductory riff of “Years Of Disgrace” which suddenly transforms into an aggressive and barbaric assault of metal upon the listener’s ear drums. Interestingly, the track switches between the soft, clean sections and the heavily aggressive sections very well.

Next is the title track, “The Reckoning”. The intro is more brutal than expected whilst keeping the smoothness of the melodic riffs. The vocals are strong and powerful, almost operatic sounding. “The Reckoning” certainly has a very power metal sound to it. The screams aren’t too bad on this track, they just don’t seem to go with the riffs. The drums are almost machine like in their precision and power. “Final State” follows after with a majestic intro. The vocals are mesmerising and epic. The riffs can only truly be described as sagaic whilst the screams are somewhat demonic sounding, mixing well with the more aggressive sections of the track.

The final two tracks of the album are demos form 2005 and 2006. “From The Ashes”, the demo from 2006, is next. It certainly is very different from the rest of the album and shows how much Pictures Of Pain’s sound has evolved. “From The Ashes” seems to have more emphasis on the harsh screaming and the rough and raw riffs as opposed to a clean and crisp sound. The final song of the album is “Guardian Of Tears”, the demo from 2005. Again, it is different to the rest of the album due to the raw, untamed sound of the guitars and drums. The sound is also more distorted as well, giving it a more underground and in-your-face sound.

There is no doubt that Pictures Of Pain have a very unique sound. Each track seems to be different from the other whilst retaining that certain sound that Pictures Of Pain are working hard to create. Even the vocals seem to be different on each track. “The Reckoning” is clearly an album for those bored of the same old generic sound that most bands seem to have these days as it is fresher and more exciting than most albums out at the moment.
