I’m always a little bit skeptical about “super groups” and even more when they claim to be “hugely different than anything out there” (words of singer Howard Jones). But the truth is that Devil You Know have indeed something special here. Sort of.

The opening track “A New Beginning” kicks off without warning or mercy. From the rebellious riffing to the wide range of angry vocal tones, this song is just perfect! It has everything – including the attitude – to become a metal hymn. I’m still wondering why was it just entitled to a lyric video instead of a storyline footage.

But then again, “A New Beginning” lacks those catchy melodic parts and their righteous contrast with the heavy ones, which is a characteristic feature in their general sound. So yeah, “Seven Years Alone” was a better choice for a proper video as it gives you a more accurate notion of what to expect from Devil You Know.

I don’t like to compare bands when the outcome is good, as I’m afraid it will undermine one’s creativity credit. And since I think “My Own” is a great song, I’ll just say that the fans of Jones’ previous band will be very happy with this track.

“Embracing The Torture” couldn’t be a more fitting title for the third track – regardless of the lyrics, the music itself introduces the devious brutality of a torturer meeting the desperate pain of the tortured. Too much of a metaphor? Just listen to the belligerent verses and the languishing chorus and you’ll see what I mean.

“A Mind Insane” carries a certain mystique whenever the rhythm drops its speed. But when the guitars keep their brisk pace and shred away, one must smile at the thought that Francesco Artusato’s original idea was not to play solos…

By now you must be wondering about the “sort of” with which I ended the first paragraph. The first I’m-not-impressed feeling comes with “For The Dead And Broken”. The band tries to diverse by going for a less aggressive approach – nothing wrong with that – but the outcome is way too shallow. This is certainly the weakest track in “The Beauty Of Destruction”.

The same when they add some sad and obscure vibe to “It’s Over” and “As Bright As The Darkness”. And “Crawl From The Dark”. And “I Am The Nothing”. Sure it does sound different, all that darkness entwined with metal and not sounding goth or doom. But, honestly, it doesn’t sound extraordinary.

Still, the uppers are stronger than the downers and it’s not out of nicety that I say that this is a good album.

Within Temptation unveil title of sixth studio album

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 8th November 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson

Dutch symphonic rockers Within Temptation have revealed that their sixth studio album will be released on 31st January 2014 and shall be titled Hydra. For those who are unfamiliar with Greek mythology, Hydra is the name of a nine-headed monster that apparently could not be killed. Guitarist Robert comments on the album title:

It’s like us. What’s more, Hydra is a perfect title for our new album, because like the monster itself, the record represents the many different sides of our music.

Within Temptation collaborated with several special guests on Hydra: Tarja Turunen, Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum and metalcore hero Howard Jones, formerly of Killswitch Engage as well as US hip-hop icon Xzibit. Robert also comments:

Xzibit is amazing. And We Run song is about how you’ve got to live your life now. He’s rapping at full force on this song, it’s really heavy.

Sharon adds:

Xzibit brings a new element to our music that we’ve never had before! It’s a new cross-over and we love it!

As for the near-legendary Tarja, Sharon recalls:

The way she delivers those high melody lines left us all speechless. We had a great time, and the fans responded beyond our expectations.

One of the album’s heaviest tracks, Dangerous was recorded with the former Killswitch Engage singer Howard Jones, whose epic vocals are a perfect fit for Sharon’s. Frontwoman Sharon comments about Howard:

I always loved Howard’s voice. He makes the song even heavier than it already is. That song is one of my favorite songs on the record and one of the fastest we’ve ever written. It has the most bass drums we’ve ever used, too, and a very fast riff which we doubled with synths. It’s not a typical synthesizer, though – it’s distorted like a guitar, and it’s very aggressive.

Hydra goes from strength to strength with Whole World Is Watching, featuring Soul Asylum’s singer Dave Pirner.

Right now, Hydra can be pre-ordered in two luxury formats: the Digital premium version and a Deluxe Box Set including extra Hydra products.

The digital premium album, complete with digi-booklet, will be available on iTunes and includes 18 audio tracks and a music video. The digital premium album features bonus Evolution Versions of four new songs, which contain audio commentary from Robert and Sharon and give you unique access to the development of the songs, their lyrical inspiration and the sound of the initial demos and vocals.

Devil You Know sign with Nuclear Blast Entertainment

When Francesco Artusato (The Francesco Artusato Project and All Shall Perish) and John Sankey (Devolved, ex-Fear Factory, ex-Divine Heresy) got together in order to expand their music creativity, Devil You Know was born. Over a dozen songs were written before they settled for a singer, who would eventually be found in Howard Jones (Blood Has Been Shed, ex-Killswitch Engage). “We were unsure if Howard would be interested,” says Sankey. “Yet, when he received the material, a creative ideal began to solidify.”

Working with Logan Mader (Gojira, Five Finger Death Punch) in what will become the debut album of Devil You Know, the band has a lot to thank the producer for: Logan definitely helped us realize and define our sound. He went from producer, to unsung member, to friend.”

Through Monte Conner, Devil You Know just got a deal with Nuclear Blast Entertainment, that should release the aforementioned album early next year. Also international touring plans and a full touring lineup will be announced soon.
