Gus G
Brand New Revolution
Power Metal/Heavy Metal
Released: 24th July 2015
via Century Media

Gus G should be no stranger to any heavy metal fan. The amount of work he has put out over the last 10+ years is shearly staggering – be that with Firewind, Dream Evil or the prince of darkness himself Ozzy Osbourne.  In early 2014 we got his debut solo record ‘I Am The Fire’.  I did like this album but it was missing a spark. I couldn’t put my finger on exactly what I couldn’t get into, but it just didn’t feel right.  At least not to me. However, with this new album on the horizon Gus G takes it above and beyond. ‘Brand New Revolution’ is nothing short of amazing. Every song feels complete and Gus takes everything he has learned over the years and capitalises on it tenfold. Also the album boasts feature guest vocal appearances from Jeff Scott Soto (Yngwie Malmsteen, Journey, Talisman), Elize Ryd (Amaranthe), Jacob Bunton (Adler, Lynam) and Mats Levén (Candlemass, Yngwie Malmsteen, Treat).

Opening on the blistering instrumental tune ‘The Quest’, where Gus just shows off his skill and displays amazing fret control. Just an air guitar fest of a song. After this, every song features a vocalist, so I think it would be best to tackle this album by each singer. Jacob Bunton brings an energy and a charisma to the songs he performs on, including the title track ‘Brand New Revolution’. These songs are played very much to his strengths, just good rock ‘n’ roll style songs with tight riffs and packed solo’s. If there’s one thing Gus knows how to do is pack an amazing solo into a short space on a track with ease.  Jacob has a great voice for these songs and sings with a great amount of confidence. Particularly on the track ‘Burn’, which I feel he was really comfortable singing. I can hear why Gus wanted him to sing on the majority of the album. Singing on 5 of the 12 songs on the album.

Next on the plate we have Jeff Scott Soto, who does a decent job with the songs he’s given. These tunes have a NWOBHM vibe about them and feel like throwback tunes.  Soto has a pretty recognisable voice and I feel he’s utilised pretty well on the songs.  Distinctly on ‘Generation G’. Although I like Soto, I think his songs are the weakest on the record and generally feel rushed.  He’s definitely having fun, so that energy he’s bringing to the tracks works pretty well here.

Elize Ryd is one of my favourite singers of the last few years.  I’m a big fan of Amaranthe, and any generally anything she’s on. She seems to be the queen of collaborations at the moment. She’s done featuring guest vocals on so many tracks from Kamelot to Nergard, and it’s pretty cool to hear her pop up here.  This is one of the few times she has a song completely to herself, as she is usually singing with someone.  Let me tell you now, she can carry a song easily on her own.  Gus has given her this dirty sounding almost tech metal song. ‘What Lies Beneath’ is a great tune with a fun beat and fits Elize’s vocals well. Her vocals just soar here.

Mats Levén, in my opinion, gets some of the strongest songs on the album. He is also the one who sounds the most comfortable on this album. ‘Come Hell or Highwater’ is a fun power metal tune, with some decent rock n roll ideas thrown in. The other two songs he features in are pretty great too. Especially the album’s closing song ‘The Demon Inside’, in which his performance is impeccable. Just great stuff.  Something also has to be said for the backing band on the album too. Gus G regulars, Jo Nunez (Firewind) on drums and Marty O’Brien (Lita Ford) on bass, sound awesome as always. The chemistry just shows on the album making the music even richer.

Overall, I freaking love this album. It far surpasses Gus’ previous solo album, as there’s more consistency and just more fun. He has a passion for metal like no other. Just a rip roaring fun record, made for any fan of heavy metal. Can’t believe I’m awarding my second five out of five this year, but this one has earned it.

5/5

Firewind announce the release of live album

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 16th April 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Greek melo-power metallers Firewind, featuring the guitar-wizard Gus G., have recently returned from an extensive North American tour together with Turisas and Stolen Babies, on which Kelly Sundown Carpenter (Adagio, Beyond Twilight) debuted as session frontman.

Now, Firewind are happy to reveal that they will be releasing a new live album on June 24th 2013 via Century Media Records in Europe to celebrate the 10th band anniversary in style. Entitled Apotheosis – Live 2012, the album will contain 17 songs recorded at special anniversary shows in Greece as well as all over Europe during the band’s Few Against Many tour in 2012 with a playing time of 69 minutes featuring a great overview of the band’s career so far, which spans over 7 studio albums so far. This live-album also marks the final release with long term singer Apollo Papathanasio, who decided to step down from his duties as singer by the end of last year.

Firewind’s Gus G. has checked in to comment the release as follows:

Apotheosis = the glorification of a subject to a divine level.

That is the word that came to my mind, while thinking of how I could best describe the feeling & the vibe of those 4 anniversary shows we played in our homeland Greece and our last European headline tour in 2012! So that had to be our live album’s title. You can feel the energy on these recordings, you can hear the screams of the most hardcore fans & the FIREWIND chants…it’s all there.

No doubt about it, it’s the sheer love from our fans and supporters that has kept us alive and strong for 10 years and we wanted to celebrate all that with this album.

We recorded all those shows, chose the best performances and now we can’t wait to release this one! See you out there this spring & summer on European festival stages!

Firewind’s latest studio album, Few Against Many, was mixed by Jason Suecof and Eyal Levi at Audiohammer Studios (Trivium, All That Remains, Death Angel, etc.) and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music (Mastodon, Hatebreed, Symphony X, etc.). The iconic album’s artwork was once again created by Firewind’s longtime partner in all design matters, Gustavo Sazes (Arch Enemy, Angra, Dream Evil, etc.). While the album’s standard version is available in the CD format as well as LP and also as Digital Download, Few Against Many is also released as limited edition Digipak CD with two bonus tracks. Few Against Many occupied the national sales charts in Greece at the # 1 top spot for several weeks!

Doro–Raise Your Fist

Posted in Review with tags , , , , , , , on 11th October 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Doro
Raise Your Fist
Released: 19th October 2012
Metal
Released via Nuclear Blast

Since the beginning of her career, Doro has gone fought and won every battle in the metal scene, eventually gaining her the unofficial title of the Queen of Metal, as well as influencing several bands in the process. With a vast and extensive discography already under her belt, Raise Your Fist, which features the likes of Lemmy (Motorhead) and Gus G (Firewind), is the latest chapter in the German singer’s legendary career.

Raise Your Fist In The Air starts the album with a powerful sound and take no shit attitude. Belting out punchy riffs and domineering vocals, the track is unrelenting from beginning to end while Coldhearted Lover lashes out with a slow, more frozen sound (pun not intended). Unsurprisingly, Doro’s vocals adapt well to the lyrical change of sound, still belting out powerful vocal sections that are really emphasised by the guitar stylings of Bas and the subtle keyboards of Luca. Some of the lines that Doro belts out are more than memorable.

Rock Til Death thrashes about with the hard rockin’ party feel while still blasting out the hard-hitting sound that has become associated with Doro’s music. I’m left with mixed feelings about the ballad track It Still Hurts. While being an enchantingly performed piece, Lemmy’s vocals just don’t seem to sound right with the soft, emotive sound of the song om the first few listens but after a while, Lemmy’s vocals really do grow on you during this track. Moving on from the slower, softer sounds, Take No Prisoner bursts in, wielding around an old-fashioned, antagonised sound which will no doubt go down a treat with fans of NWOBHM bands such as Judas Priest. The use of sirens in the song add that a certain prison-break feel and mysticism to the song as well.

Grab the Bull (Last Man Standing), which features Gus G, carries on the aggressive tone of the previous track but at a slower pace – And it still packs more punch than a leather belt across the face. Gus’ part on the album throws in a crisp, clean bit of metal, contrasting well with the raw, callous sound of the song. Engel (German for “Angel”) has all the makings for an instant classic ballad, soothing and seductive vocals and a magical piano medley. The use of German lyrics add a touch of untamed power to the sound, echoing well throughout the song. The contrasting use of keyboards and guitars do a lot to enchanting the listener as well, throwing in a certain despair that add the emotion to the lyrics and really make the vocals stand out.

Freiheit (Human Rights) continues the use of German lyrics – The track overall requires a couple of listens before you can really appreciate the composition and beauty of the song though it may be a little soft for those that are wanting something heavier like Little Headbanger (Nackenbrecher) which unleashes a fury of guitars and violent drums topped with belting vocals and face-melting basslines. Doro’s vocals morph into something more furious sounding for Revenge, dancing well with the storming guitars and raging drums. It certainly is one of the stand-out tracks on the album, crashing back and forth like a vehement ocean.

Free My Heart is a drastic change in pace and sound from the previous song, calling back the docile elements while still echoing its own grand, majestic sound complete with with powerful, grandiose keyboards and vocals that really pack a good walloping. Victory sounds like a good ol’ fashioned anthem of victory, really displaying some of Doro’s vocal talents before the album ends with the acoustic whisperings of Hero, another powerful and emotive track that is a fitting tribute to the late, great Ronnie James Dio. The guitars and keyboards call out beautifully, reflecting the emotions in the lyrics while at the same time screaming out with an epic sound.

It’s not hard to deny Doro’s title as the Queen of Metal and by the sounds of Raise Your Fist, she’ll be holding onto her crown for a long time to come. The album is one to write about about, with some memorable anthems and more emotion invoking tracks, so get ready to Raise Your Fist!

4.8/5
