Therion announce release of Theli deluxe package and three disc DVD set Adulruna Redivia And Beyond

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , , , on 13th January 2014 by Nico Solheim-Davidson

24th February will see the release of two – yes, two – Therion releases. The releases are the deluxe edition CD and DVD of their all-time classic Theli as well as a 3-DVD package (limited edition incl. bonus DVD) called Adulruna Redivia And Beyond.

Theli, which was released in 1996, is Therion’s fifth studio album and one of their most memorable releases. The album features the band’s most  legendary hit to date: To Mega Therion. It also features the band’s ten minute epic The Siren Of The Woods as well as the hymn Cults of the Shadow. The album also made use of two different choirs and guest vocalist Dan Swanö from Edge of Sanity.

The deluxe edition of Theli has three more bonus tracks: In Rememberance, Black Fairy and the Scorpions cover version Fly To The Rainbow as well as a bonus DVD with the entire album performed live.

Adulruna Redivia And Beyond is a double live DVD + bonus DVD, limited edition digipak. The two shows were recorded live in Atlanta in 2011 and in Budapest 2007. The band commented:

The concert recorded in Hungary was a concert on the “Adulruna Rediviva” 20 year Anniversary-Tour in December. The idea of the tour was to play the entire Theli album + a set consisting of songs that the fans had voted for on the band web page. Piotr Wawrzeniuk and our old friend Messiah Marcolin joined in to make this evening extra special. The concert in Atlanta was the band‘s only show in the USA since 2007 and was shot during the band‘s headline performance at the ProgPower festival 2011.

Witherscape reveal artwork and tracklist for debut album The Inheritance

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 6th June 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson

Witherscape, the stunning new dark metal outfit formed by Swedish singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer extraordinaire Dan Swanö together with fellow Swedish multi-instrumentalist Ragnar Widerberg, will be releasing their debut album The Inheritance on July 29th 2013 in Europe and August 6th 2013 in North America via Century Media Records.

After having recently launched a first song sample for Witherscape to much online acclaim, it is now time to reveal the artwork and tracklisting details for The Inheritance:

1. Mother Of The Soul
2. Astrid Falls
3. Dead For A Day
4. Dying For The Sun
5. To The Calling Of Blood And Dreams
6 .The Math Of The Myth
7. Crawling From Validity
8 .The Wedlock Observation
9. The Inheritance

The Inheritance is a pretty thick concept album split into different episodes and very briefly, the Witherscape story takes place in a remote village in northern Sweden in the late 1800’s. The central character lives in Stockholm and comes from wealth, and upon the death of his family he’s informed by the family lawyer that he has inherited a large estate up north. Having been oblivious to the estate’s existence, he decides to investigate, and once he’s there all kinds of weird shit happens…, according to Dan Swanö.

The hauntingly beautiful cover artwork for The Inheritance, which can be seen above, was created by Travis Smith, who has worked with bands like Opeth, Nevermore, Death and also Katatonia before.

Dan Swanö also checked in to comment about the artwork as follows:

Both me and Ragnar are fascinated by old abandoned buildings and it was pretty clear from the start that we would have the estate our main character inherits on the album cover. We used Travis Smith as a “medium” for our visual ideas and he did a spectacular job transforming our written wishes into a real image.

Witherscape marks the long overdue return as active composer and recording artist for Dan Swanö in the world of extreme metal, after having mostly been involved on the studio mixing end of things in these past years. Granted, The Inheritance is not purely a Death Metal release, but it smoothly showcases both the heavier and the mellow sides of Swanö’s creativity and should consequently not only please fans of his earlier efforts like Moontower or the Edge Of Sanity catalogue, but also attract friends of progressively atmospheric contemporary Metal in the vein of Opeth, Katatonia or Amorphis.

According to Swanö, Witherscape has been in planning for a long time, spawned as a result of his working relationship with Widerberg, which began at a Swedish music store. The two multi-instrumentalists discovered that they had so much in common musically that brainstorming for a full-on metal project of their own was the next logical step. Widerberg quotes acts like early Judas Priest, Rush, King Crimson and Mercyful Fate as far as his inspirations in regards to Witherscape and Swanö elaborates his list to also include Judas Priest (1975-1989), Voivod, Queensryche, Rush, Marillion and Mercyful Fate.

Witherscape’s The Inheritance is the first release under a longterm worldwide recording deal signed between Dan Swanö and Century Media Records earlier this year.

Memory Garden complete recording of Doomain

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 5th February 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson

Swedish epic doom metal band Memory Garden have finished the recordings for their upcoming fifth album Doomain. The album was recorded at Annoying Sound Factory and SolnaSound Recording by the band with a little engineering assistance from Mike Wead (King Diamond) during the lead guitar sessions. The mix was done by Dan Swanö at Unisound.

Memory Garden elaborate on the project: “The recording of Doomain must be the most relaxed album session we’ve ever done. We recorded most of the album ourselves in our own studio and took the time we wanted and needed to get it done. Dan Swanö helped us getting the rig together and he provided us with the tools to do it and from there we did it ourselves. The lead guitar sessions were done at SolnaSound Recording by Simon & Mike Wead. When it all was done it was sent to Dan Swanö and Unisound for mix and mastering. The final album is amazing and we are so thrilled to get it out to all of you.”

The band comment on the album title: “We wanted a short and effective title to this album. It’s a little game of words referring to the style of music we play “doom metal” and the actual word “domain”. We see this album as a statement of what Memory Garden stands for music-wise and this album is certainly down our alley, it’s in our Doomain.”

Doomain will be released the 12th/15th of April via Metal Blade Records in Europe on vinyl and as a Digi-CD and on April 15th in North America via all digital music retailers.

Memory Garden has just recently resigned to Metal Blade Records. Memory Garden was found in 1992 in Sweden and have since then released four albums, two of them under the flag of Metal Blade Records (Verdict Of Posterity in 1998 and Mirage in 2000).

Memory Garden:
Stefan Berglund – Vocals
Simon Johansson – Lead Guitars
Andreas Mäkelä – Guitars
Johan Fredrikson – Bass Guitar
Tom Björn – Drums

Album art, track listing, and music from Doomain will be released soon. Stay tuned!

Barren Earth – THE RAIN BEGINS Video Now Online

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 2nd March 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson

‘The Rains Begin’, the debut video from Barren Earth‘s new masterwork, ‘The Devil’s Resolve‘, is now finally complete. The video was directed by Ville Rissanen at Obscure Entertainment, who has also previously worked with fellow countrymen, Insomnium.

Mixed by Dan Swanö (Opeth/Katatonia) at Unisound, ‘The Devil’s Resolve’ continues with all the trademarks one has come to associate with Barren Earth: brutal riffs, gloomy growls, majestic melodies, as well as acoustic and progressive passages. But this time the band has delved even deeper, and takes their music to the extremes. What was brutal on the first release is now tripled and what was proggy is also tripled.

Audio & video clips, including a new video interview with bassist Olli Pekka-Laine can be found here.

The Devil’s Resolve’ is to be released March 12th on Peaceville Records on CD & vinyl.
