I’m all pro-change and moving forward in a different direction, but when a band manages to keep doing the same and still sound awesome, said band gets kudos from me. So congrats, Dark Tranquillity, you’ve just earned a ton of them.

“Atoma” is their 11th album and still features all the traits that Swedish melodeath fans love. So if the title-track and “Our Proof Of Life” both bear some upbeat melodies and can still sound pretty somber, you’ll face straightforward ominous and obscure vibes in songs like “Forward Momentum” or “A Force Of Hand”“Merciless Fate” even borders the goth metal zone.

Or those fast outbursts in “The Pitiless” and “When The World Screams” and then the catchy choruses in “Clearing Skies” and “Neutrality”. And the epic grand finale in the form of “Caves And Embers”.

It’s such a rich combination of vocals, guitars (bass included) and keyboards – so Dark Tranquillity – that the outcome could only be 5/5. In fact, those are the key-words here: Dark Tranquillity style. ‘Nuff said.

Dr. Living Dead – Crush The Sublime Gods

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , on 16th February 2015 by Paul Macmillan

Dr. Living Dead
Crush The Sublime Gods
Release: 23rd February 2015
Thrash / crossover
Released via Century Media Records

Dr Living Dead - Crush The Sublime Gods

More thrash!?!?! Looks like 2015 is going to be a year of it, and, yet again, this is a solid release for the genre. Dr Living Dead’s third album, Crush The Sublime Gods, is 99% pure, unrelenting, high-speed thrash riff-worship. The opening moments of first track Final Broadcast may lead listeners to believe they are about to witness the second coming of Megadeth’s last true great, Count Down To Extinction, but the mid-paced chug of developed thrash is left to the minimum throughout.

Far more prevalent is this employment of the Slayer style chainsaw attack, albeit to the accompaniment of nicer vocals and Annihilator’s slightly dark tongue-in-check sense of humour. I don’t think Araya and co. ever really got how inseparable some riffing is from a comical feel, or if they did, they never embraced it. Not that Dr Living Dead are a joke band. Far from it. Some people might not even get the ‘laughs’ herein. I might even be imagining them, but if I’m not, it’s nice to see a non-native English speaking band manage it so well.

It seems all the more likely that it is the case when hearing such invitations to stomp as on the intro to Triggerkiller, instantly bringing Stormtroopers Of Death to the mind of the connoisseur. There are plenty of these moments spattered throughout Crush The Sublime Gods, but they quickly subside and give way to rapid-fire, precision guitar work, which overflows with the spirit of old-school thrash.

As a whole, most other sub-genres of metal could learn a lot from the production values on many recent thrash releases – such as ‘things sound heavier when they’re clearer and played well’ – and this is no exception. Crisp and raw, with a sweet bottom shelf, all at the same time, the producer has done sterling work here. It helps that the band themselves are on fire, and if there is even half the amount of energy involved in their live shows as there is captured on record, they are going to destroy when they go out this March with Suicidal Angels. I’m thinking they may well be interested in all things fast, so the autobahn should keep them entertained for a bit.

Wrapping up, this is a peach of a release, and with just a tiny little bit more originality/diversity, it would have been a 5/5 from me. Hopefully, if there is a change, that’s all it is, because the rest of the mix is perfect, and Dr Living Dead appear to be on to something really special.

4.5/5

Dark Fortress announce seventh studio album plus Euro tour dates

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on 1st July 2014 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Dark Fortress frontman and lyricist Morean asks:

What happens to life on earth if the fragile laws of nature are altered even by a little bit? How can the human psyche deal with the perspective of inevitable extinction? How far can the human soul be stripped before its essence vanishes completely? Can we contain the implications of forced and radical evolution and the insanity it brings?

These questions are raised by the band’s seventh studio alum Venereal Dawn, which like most previous Dark Fortress albums will be a concept album, focusing on the themes of survival, betrayal and sacrifice in an extremely hostile environment. The tracklisting is as follows:

1. Venereal Dawn
2. Lloigor
3. Betrayal And Vengeance
4. Chrysalis
5. I Am The Jigsaw Of A Mad God
6. The Deep

8. Luciform
9. On Fever’s Wings

Venereal Dawn is scheduled for a release on the following dates:

Europe, Australia / NZ: 1st September 2014
USA, Canada: 2nd September 2014

To spill the coming vicious blackness that is Venereal Dawn, an album which has been three years in the making, Dark Fortress have also announced their unholy campaign across Europe with Secrets of the Moon and Schammasch in October. The dates of this unholy campaign across the European continent are as follow:

16.10.14 (DE) Munich – Feierwerk

Arch Enemy unveil artwork and tracklist for War Eternal

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on 29th March 2014 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Following the recent replacement of Angela Gossow with Alissa White-Gluz (ex-The Agonist), Arch Enemy has become a hot topic on the metal scene. The band will be releasing their ninth studio album, War Eternal, via Century Media in June later this year. The band have now officially unveiled the artwork, as seen above, for the album. The artwork for War Eternal was created by Costin Chioreanu, who previously worked with Michael Amott on Spiritual Beggars’ re-issue of their self-titled debut. Chief song-writer, guitarist and band leader Michael Amott comments:

I was looking for a hand-drawn feel with a unique atmosphere, something that would complement the music that we’ve been working so hard on these last couple of years. Brutality Will Prevail announce new album details

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on 27th January 2014 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

British hardcore mob Brutality Will Prevail will be releasing their new album Suspension Of Consciousness on 7th April via Siege Of Amida Records and Century Media. The album, the band’s fourth full length, will mark the recorded debuts of frontman Louis Gauthier and drummer Craig Reynolds, who joined Brutality Will Prevail during the international touring cycle for the band’s 2012 release Scatter The Ashes.

Despite their bludgeoning live schedule which saw the band exporting their brand of down-tempo heaviness as far afield as Japan, Australia and Indonesia, Brutality Will Prevail spent the majority of 2013 developing new material, eager to fully showcase the fresh blood in their ranks. As drummer Reynolds recalls:

We recorded through amazing vintage equipment. The entire album was tracked in just 6 days with the intensity of a live show; there was none of this computer reliant, digi-fix-this-fix-that shit that today’s heavy scene has become so polluted with.

Once BWP’s kinetic tracking session was complete, Converge’s Kurt Ballou was tasked with mixing duties, the veteran producer bringing his unique, inimitable snarl to a recording already bursting with feral aggression. Though brute force is far from all that Suspension has to offer, BWP draw on a varied spectrum of influences this time around, from Slayer and Slipknot to Baroness and Cave In, to bring new layers of depth and creativity to their sonic forge. Guitarist Ash Gray comments:

This album is the first time we haven’t held ourselves back in any way. It still has some hallmarks of the classic BWP sound, but we also really pushed ourselves to progress and try new things, and no one more so than Louis (Gauthier, vocals) – his performance really shines, and there are definitely some surprises throughout the record. The past year, culminating in this album, has been about much more than just a line up change, this is a fresh start.

Watain release first video for Outlaw; UK tour in process

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , , on 5th December 2013 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Swedish black metal titans Watain have released the first music video for their song Outlaw. The song is taken from the band’s recent musical opus The Wild Hunt, which was released in August earlier this year through the band’s own label His Master’s Noise via Century Media. The video is produced by Watain and Johan Bååth who already directed the band’s Opus Diaboli DVD in 2012. The video can be viewed below. Watain comment:

The Outlaw video is a knife stab in the face of today’s clean and witty metal scene and yet another step for us to bring back something real and extreme into this limping music movement.

The band also started their UK tour earlier tonight and can be caught live at the following dates:

Century Media to release Dawn’s entire discography in 2014

Posted in Misc., News with tags , on 4th December 2013 by izaforestspirit

Century Media Records have acquired a license for the entire discography of the Swedish melodic death metal band Dawn and plan to release all the albums via their label in 2014.

In the first half of 2014 everything the band has ever recorded will be made available again, carefully remastered by Dan Swanö, accompanied by reworked artworks and more – done in full cooperation with the band.

Dawn was originally formed as a pure death metal act back in 1990 before changing their style towards a more melodic and atmospheric direction in the same vein as their fellow countrymen Dissection. Their last album ‘Slaughtersun (Crown of the Triarchy)’ was released in 1998. Since then the only Dawn material available was a rare compilation album on Necropolis Records which was released in 2004.

Next year will see a release of the following:

Demos 1991 – 1993 (title tba) CD/LP
‘Nær Sólen Gar Niþer For Evogher’ (originally released in 1994) CD/LP
‘Sorgh På Svarte Vingar Fløgh’ (originally released in 1996) MCD/MLP
‘Slaughtersun – Crown Of The Triarchy’ (originally released in 1998) CD/2LP
