Band of the Month: Ravenage [09/2012]

Posted in Band Of The Month with tags , , , , , , , on 8th September 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Following an epic battle of votes, none other than Hull-based Viking warband Ravenage came out as the victor.

Formed back in the cold winter nights of 2007, the band have gone on to forge together a unique, powerful and epic sound, along with three releases under their sword belts. Ravenage have also shared the stage with the likes of Skyclad and Hecate Enthroned, as well as Viking metal heavyweights Tyr. Later this month, Ravenage will also be partaking in the first ever Warhorns festival, where they will be playing with the likes of Skyforger, Nothgard and Wolfchant, as well as Cryptic Age, Old Corpse Road and Norderobring.

So, if you like your metal loud, heavy, melodic, vicious and more epic than Lord of the Rings, Ravenage are well worth checking out.

Band of the Month: Spires [08/12]

Posted in Band Of The Month with tags on 2nd August 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Following the release of their brilliant acoustic EP Lucid Abstractions, progressive metallers Spires are this month’s Band of the Month! Since the release of their debut album, Spiral of Ascension, the band have had been on the rise, with performances at Bloodstock 2011 and a UK tour with Incassum last year.

Both releases by the band have been praised by fans and critics alike and their live shows have always gone down a treat. Hopefully, there’s more on the horizon for Spires.

You can check out Spires here.

Band of the Month [07/2012]: Gloomlurker

Posted in Band Of The Month with tags , , on 1st July 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Hailing from the grim and not-so-frostbitten town of Grimsby, deathened doom lords Gloomlurker are this month’s BOTM.

The deathened doom quintet have already shared the stage with the likes of Sarah Jezebel Deva, Severed Heaven, Old Corpse Road and Infernal Creation. The band’s sound is a fine mixture of death metal elements and droning doom riffs mixed in with vocals more demonic than the girl that gets possessed in The Exorcist.

You can check out Gloomlurker on Facebook, here.

After a gruelling tie breaker, Soma Dark have come out as this month’s Band of the Month.

Soma Dark’s sound can only really be described as a melodic powerhouse of brutalising riffs, grooves and licks mixed in with earth shaking bass and drum work topped off with some of the finest vocals on the underground scene. Soma Dark are also becoming well known for their mighty live shows.

Band of the Month [05/2012]: Cyb3rnator

Posted in Band Of The Month with tags , , on 5th May 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

So, we’re a bit late announcing this month’s BOTM which is all my fault since I’ve become far too lazy lately. Anyway, this month’s BOTM is somewhat of a surprise… We’re proud to announce that the 8-bit/dubstep duo Cyb3rnator as May’s Band of the Month. While it’s a surprise that a dubstep act have taken the title, Cyb3rnator do deserve it, especially after their performance supporting Severed Heaven in April.

Cyb3rnator have virtually mastered the balance of their 8-bit and dubstep. The duo sound just as good live as they do in the studio and we’re certainly looking forward to hearing from these guys in the future.

You can check out Cyb3rnator over on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CYB3RNATOR

Band of the Month: Low Culture [04/2012]

Posted in Band Of The Month with tags , , , , on 1st April 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Breaking away from tradition for a second time of metal acts winning the Band of the Month, Low Culture have been crowned this month’s Band of the Month. They beat the likes of Alice In Thunderland and Wolfcrusher in the poll and came out on top. According to their Facebook, the band are a mixture of blues and punk rock, which certainly does ring true with their music. There’s a hint of good ol’ fashioned, take no prisoners rock n roll mixed into their songs as well. Either way, Low Culture have a truly unique sound and are certainly a band to check out.

Low Culture are:

Peaches Jones – Guitar & Vocals,
Doc Ashton – Drums,
Morley Adams – Lead Guitar
Ryan – Bass

You can check out the band’s music by clicking here.

Don’t forget that Low Culture are supporting Severed Heaven at The Lamp in Hull on 29th April. Tickets can be purchased here.

Band of the Month [March 2012]: Incassum

Posted in Band Of The Month with tags , , , , , , on 2nd March 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

This month’s Band of the Month come in the form of Manchester-based melodic metallers Incassum. The band blend a vicious combination of melodic vocals, snarling growls and screams with a hint of face tearing riffs. I was lucky enough to have seen Incassum back in November when they were touring with Spires.

Incassum are certainly one of the few bands that bring their all to both the studio and the stage.

The band will also be playing at Valkyrian Festival, in aid of Autism Plus later this year at The Lamp in Hull.

In the mean time, here’s a video of Incassum performing at The Ringside in Hull.

Band Of The Month [February, 2012]: Dakesis

Posted in Band Of The Month with tags , , , , , , , on 1st February 2012 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

And Dakesis are this month’s Band of the Month! Dakesis are a five piece prog-power metal outfit from the birthplace of metal… Birmingham. 2011 saw the release of their debut album Trial By Fire, which has been praised by critics and fans alike. This year is clearly the year for Dakesis as they will be supporting German power metal legends Edguy this coming Friday and headlining Valkyrian Festival on 24th November at the Lamp in Hull.

Dakesis are definitely one of the finest power metal bands on the scene and there are clearly big things in store of these guys and gals.

You’ve not heard black metal until you’ve heard “true Lancastrian black metal” which is exactly what this month’s BOTM Wolfthorn are. Blending a strong use of heavy guitars and snarling vocals, Wolfthorn have slowly established themselves as a band to be seen in the Lancashire metal scene. 2012 is looking to be their year already, so keep your ears for when these lads hit your town.

Band Of The Month [December, 2011]: Collisions

Posted in Band Of The Month with tags , , , on 2nd December 2011 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

Breaking tradition of a metal band being the Band of the Month, upcoming Hull-based post-hardcore quintet Collisions smashed the other bands in the voting last week and no wonder why. Powerful guitar sections, strong vocals and sick drums mixed in with an EP produced by Lee Rule makes for a damn good band.

Unfortunately, we couldn’t find a picture of the band to go along with this article. So, here’s a pretty video instead! Well, we say video…

Band Of The Month [November, 2011]: Aonia

Following recent revelations involving the voting being rigged, we were forced to randomly select a BOTM for this month [November]. We are pleased to announce that Aonia are this month’s Band of the Month!

In the Greek mythos, “Aonia” is the place where muses dwell near Helicon mountain. Though their name is derived from classical mythology, Aonia’s music is far from being classical. With riffs that roar like the thunder of Olympus and strong operatic vocals provided by their front woman Mel, Aonia have been on the rise for the past few years sharing the stage with the likes of Evil Scarecrow and Scarlet’s Wake.

Unlike most female fronted bands, Aonia lack a heavy emphasis on the symphonic element, helping add to their unique and mythic sound. f you like bands and artists like Nightwish, Within Temptation, Epica, ReVamp, After Forever, Leaves Eyes, Delain or Tarja then check out Aonia.

Aonia will also be playing Valkyrian Festival later this month with Cryptic Age, XIII, Infernal Creation and many more.

Band Of The Month [October, 2011]: Old Corpse Road

Posted in Band Of The Month with tags , , , , , on 1st October 2011 by Nico Solheim-Davidson, the North Sea Poet

The voting for October’s Band Of The Month began as a fierce competition between The Colour Line and ReVerbed, however, Darlington-based blackened folk metal quintet Old Corpse Road swooped in at the last minute and snatched victory quite unexpectedly gaining the majority of the votes. Old Corpse Road avoid the cliché black metal style of Satanic imagery, instead, their songs are about British folklore with masterfully written music and lyrics. Old Corpse Road have shared the stage with the likes of Hecate Enthroned, Northern Oak, Windrider and Skyclad.

Pastel Jack are the Band of the Month for August 2011, following the results of the poll we did on the official Valkyrian Music Facebook page.
Pastel Jack are a four-piece metal band that hail from Kingston Upon Hull, East Yorkshire. They bring in a lot from their influences, which include Trivium, Alterbridge and Queen. Pastel Jack are well known for their aggressive and catchy hooks, technical drum work and powerful vocals.

They’ve shared the stage with the likes of Sworn Amongst, XIII, Clown Corpse, Skyclad and Violent Deception. They will also be playing at Valkyrian Festival and they have their first full-length album [Trojan Horse] due for release soon.

Band History

Pastel Jack was officially formed in 2007 when Neil Bailey took the place as the bands singer. They spent the next two years working on their sound, honing their skills live and writing.
In 2009 they entered the studio at ‘Silent City Studios’ in Leeds to record their first EP “Ghost in the Machine”
2011 Pastel Jack re-enter the studio to record their debut album “Trojan Horse”.
