Nebelfront – Only In My Dreams

Posted in CD, Metal with tags , on 20th January 2015 by izaforestspirit

Nebelfront
Only In My Dreams
Released 12th January 2015
Atmospheric/ Depressive Black Metal/ Dark Ambient
Released via Cursed Records

‘Only In My Dreams’ is the second album from the Austrian black metal band Nebelfront. It is the follow up to their debut ‘Pour ma sœur’ which was released back in 2010.

The opening instrumental Memories caught me by surprise with its melodic guitar intro and strangely pleasant but sombre feel. There’s nothing even remotely close to black metal on there; in fact it sounds more like dark ambient. River on the other hand, is an entirely different beast with its nihilistic black metal screams and a dramatic shift towards a much faster pace particularly in the drums. Oh yes, now this is what I call “black metal”.

This sets the tone for the rest of the album. All the tracks that come after River share the same bleak atmosphere and the pace is similar. Yet unlike that song, the others are considerably longer and more complex in structure. For example, the tile track starts off a little slower than its predecessors and the guitar sounds less bleak and more atmospheric. The vocals however, are just as haunting as on the previous tracks. Then there’s XII. I with its tranquil intro, which marks a brief return to the dark ambient style just before the creepy vocals kick in. Last but not least there is Somewhere, which features a female singer along with some melodic parts sandwiched between the bleak screams.

Overall this album requires some patience from the listener. I wouldn’t recommend this to fans of raw black metal. However if you’re a fan of both black metal and dark ambient or the earlier works of Caïna then you should give this a try.

Super group Motor Sister to release debut album in March

It all started when Anthrax-Scott Ian turned 50 and invited some friends over for a jam. “I wanted to cherry-pick a set list of my favorite Mother Superior songs and get these guys together and have the concert at my house”, says Ian. And since his wife Pearl Aday has been working on her solo career with Mother Superior front man Jim Wilson for years now, it didn’t take long for Motor Sister to take shape –  a dream-team comprised of Wilson on vocals & guitar, Ian on guitar, Aday on backing vocals), Joey Vera on bass and John Tempesta on drums).

Ian called producer Jay Ruston (Anthrax, Steel Panther) and in two days – yes, you’ve read it well: TWO DAYS – the album was done! “Ride” is its title and Metal Blade Records will have the honor of release it on 9th March. Track list is as follows:

1. A Hole
2. This Song Reminds Me of You
3. Beg Borrow Steal
4. Fool Around
5. Get That Girl
6. Head Hanging Low
7. Fork in the Road
8. Little Motor Sister
9. Pretty in the Morning
10. Whore
11. Doghouse
12. Devil Wind

A special show will take place on 12th February in Brooklyn, NY, at Saint Vitus.

Furyon – Lost Salvation

Posted in Metal with tags , on 13th January 2015 by izaforestspirit

Furyon
Lost Salvation
Released 23rd February 2015 (Europe), USA/ Japan release date TBA
Hard Rock/ Heavy Metal
Released via Dream Records

‘Lost Salvation’ is the second album from the Brighton based, British heavy metal band Furyon. It is the follow-up to their highly acclaimed debut ‘Gravitas’ which was produced by Rick Beato (Shinedown, Fozzy) back in 2010.

First up is ‘All That I Have‘, a melodic track which offers an interesting mix of clear, story-telling, hard rock vocals with powerful, heavy metal guitar riffs. The pace is rather slow but the skillfully executed guitar melodies make it memorable. The title track is much heavier and faster in comparison and the aggressive, “shredding” guitars and a catchy chorus only add to the appeal.

Yet there’s more to these guys than just your average hard rock music. The album also features some dark, groove metal undertones in both the drumming and the guitar riffs as evident in tracks such as ‘Scapegoat‘. Other memorable songs include: ‘Good Sky‘ which has some of best and the most energetic guitar solos on here and ‘Wiseman‘ with its “playful” rocking guitars, catchy solos and an easy to follow chorus. I can foresee the latter becoming a crowd favourite at the live shows.

Overall, this is a very well produced album from a promising band. I appreciate the variety in their sound and the fact that they don’t just play it safe. Their signature mix of hard rock, melodic heavy metal, groove and even elements of progressive metal is refreshing to hear.

Italian Saints Trade will release their debut album “Robbed In Paradise” on the 10th February. Featuring 11 tracks influenced by the ’80s golden age of hard rock, “Robbed In Paradise”, every one of them explores the complexity of the human soul and feelings. The title itself expresses the frustration and unfairness of being confronted by something unpleasant in an otherwise perfect place/situation.

If you have the chance to drop by Alchemica Music Club in Bologna (IT) on 7th February, the release party will be held there.
