Posted in News with tags , , , , , on 25th March 2014 by Nico Davidson

Fresh from their very special, sold-out-in-a-day Southern Hospitality UK tour last month, Kentucky rockers Black Stone Cherry have proudly announced a string of UK arena shows that will take place in October and November. The band’s drummer, John Fred Young, comments:

We are beyond thrilled to be headlining our first arena tour in the UK!  It’s amazing for us to have this opportunity and we owe it all to the incredible fans that continue to support us and believe in our music!

Widely acknowledged as an electrifying live band, Black Stone Cherry are also looking forward to the release of their fourth studio album, Magic Mountain, which hits stores on 5th May through Roadrunner Records.  The Joe Barresi (QOTSA, Soundgarden)-produced opus follows 2011’s Between The Devil And The Deep Blue Sea which racked up a silver sales certification from the BPI (British Phonographic Industry), marking over 60,000 UK copies sold.  Magic Mountain can already be pre-ordered over at iTunes and Amazon.

Support on all dates comes from two Roadrunner labelmates, rabble-rousing Aussies Airbourne, who released their third album Black Dog Barking in May of last year and radio-friendly Canadians, Theory Of A Deadman, who are working on a new album pencilled for release this summer. Tour dates are as follow:

Mon 27th Oct – SHEFFIELD Arena
Tue 28th Oct – CARDIFF Arena

Sabbath Assembly premiere new video for I, Satan

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 25th March 2014 by Nico Davidson

The ever singular Sabbath Assembly have recently premiered the new video for their latest single, I, Satan, from their third album Quaternity. The album is set for international release via Svart Records this Friday (28th March 2014). The video for I, Satan, which can be viewed below, was created entirely by the band themselves. The song itself features text from sacred Process Church of the Final Judgment scriptures, all written from the standpoint of the Lord of the Underworld. The song delivers a brutal assault with lines such as “Burn the chaff of humanity, dance proud around the leaping flames,” and “Put aside your litanies, priest, Satan does not retreat.” Additional lyrical inspiration comes from Inno A Satana, a classic poem used in Satanic liturgies since it was published in 1865, written by Italian Nobel Prize Winner Giosue Carducci.

Vanna hit studio to record debut Pure Noise Records release

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 25th March 2014 by Nico Davidson

Boston melodic hardcore unit Vanna have entered the studio to record their next album, which will also act as the band’s debut release through Pure Noise Records as well as their fifth studio album. Vanna are currently recording at the Machine Shop in NJ with Will Putney (Stay From The Path, Northlane, Miss May I). The band’s fifth studio album will be out in summer later this year. Vocalist Davey Muise comments:

One of the things we love most about music is the freedom to try new things and mess around with new sounds and bring different elements into play. We’ve gotten to work with such amazing producers and engineers in the past. As we started looking towards our future and what we wanted to capture with a new record we started jamming some of out favourite sounding records of late and they all had one common denominator, Will Putney.

Making the move to Pure Noise Records was a direction step for us that we really wanted and we needed a producer and studio that could take us to levels and places we ourselves haven’t been too. Hearing Will was psyched to work with us was the icing on the cake for all involved. Will himself being a touring musician and really having an ear to the ground and a finger on the pulse of what’s going on not only in music but the world, certainly made our mutual decision very easy. We can’t wait to see what he and the staff at The Machine Shop will pull out of us this time. Except new and big things.

The band will continue their reputation of being one of the hardest working touring bands by appearing on the whole of the US Warped tour this summer.

Lacuna Coil – Broken Crown Halo

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , on 24th March 2014 by mickbirchy

Lacuna Coil
Broken Crown Halo

Released 31st March 2014
Gothic Metal/Pop Metal
Released via Century Media

To be perfectly honest, I have had an on-off relationship with Lacuna Coil over the years and was seriously impressed with the 2012 release “Dark Adrenaline”, because of this, I was hoping that this was the start of them coming back to the more Gothic sounding symphonic metal rather than the alt. rock sound they’d been going with, but, this isn’t the case with Broken Crown Halo.  It’s another rock record, which is fine, but this leaves little the atmosphere, the tone and overall makes you wish for something a little extra.

Although it’s not what I was expecting, there is still a lot to like with this album, it starts quite well with the song Nothing Stands in Our Way.  A nice opener with a heavy tone and some cool synth in the back of the production, it’s almost a throwback to the previous album.  Then it goes downhill and fast with onslaught of, quite frankly, lazy sounding music and there is nothing to keep you invested in the songs.  At times there is interesting, even beautiful imagery in the lyrics such as in Hostage to the Light and it’s that imagery that kept me somewhat hooked into the album as the music itself was lackluster.  The band have said “We’ve always been fascinated by the differences and comparisons between real life and fairy tales, and on this album we decided to mix the two worlds when writing our lyrics”  and they do manage to write this in to some of the songs to great effect, giving a sense of wonder, however the music never complements it.

It is only by the halfway point of the album that I become interested in the music again, particularly with the song I Forgive (But I Won’t Forget Your Name), it’s only by this track that the actual music captures my interest rather than the lyrics alone and it seems they keep building on it as the last part of the album is really good.  Sure, there is nothing ground-breaking, but there seems to be a passion during these song.  I became fascinated with the tonal shift, the synth wasn’t just there to sound pretty, it creates an atmosphere whilst the guitars drive the songs forward.

If I were to recommend any of the tracks, definitely check out Infection & In The End I Feel Alive, simply put, these are the two track I found the most interesting.  They are not just throwing old sounds at you nor are the songs boring.  The lyrics are deep and I feel show off what the band was trying to achieve with this album the best.

As one of the bigger names signed to Century Media records they show no sign of slowing down now, this being their seventh record and although this wasn’t the dark and Gothic symphonic metal I had hoped for, it is still a good album.  This is by no means is this a good “jumping on point” if you have never listened to Lacuna Coil before, but the fans of the band and the genre there is clever imagery and enough of a heavy tone to keep your interest.

Vanhelga reveal details and artwork for Längtan

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 24th March 2014 by Nico Davidson

With Längtan set for release on 28th April, Swedish band Vanhelga have recently unveiled the details and artwork (which can be seen above) for the upcoming album. Längtan, which will be the band’s third studio album, takes longing and death as the theme, exploring the idea that death is more of a beginning than an end, allowing one to be free from the restrictions of society that are placed upon us. The album also explores the idea that death is not something to be feared but rather to be longed for.

The album will be released in CD format on the Art of Propaganda label on the 28th April, and in vinyl format on Carnal Records on a date as yet to be confirmed.  Artwork for Längtan is by the Spanish artist Juanjo Castellano. Tracklisting as follows:

2. Där evigheten inväntar mig
3. Evig förändring
4. Med mina andetag
5. Joyless
6. Låt snön falla
7. Kärleksförklaring
8. Vansinnesvardag

Dead By April – Let The World Know

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , on 21st March 2014 by Pieni

Dead By April
“Let The World Know”
Pop metal
Released on 12th February 2014
Via Universal Music

 photo Let_The_World_Know_zpsbc9cf3a4.jpg

I’ve always had a WTF feeling whenever hearing something new from Dead By April, ever since the very first time I’ve listened to “Losing You” back in late 2008/early 2009. But then the songs would find their way through my ears and stick around, to the point where I would admit I liked them. Not this time. Actually, not since “Mystery”, the song they’ve tried taking to Eurovision Song Contest 2012.

“Let The World Know” is out for over a month now, I’ve listened to it several times, and the WTF feeling still lingers, meaning that, to me, this isn’t a good album. I should have guessed since I didn’t have any reaction, good or bad, to the first songs released to the public (“Freeze Frame”, “Empathy” and “As A Butterfly”). They sounded too average and nothing that they haven’t done before. As a friend of mine said,DBA is a band that covers itself”. And when “As A Butterfly” ends up being one of the best songs in the album after all, along with “Beautiful Nightmare”, that’s pretty bad.

When I reviewed “Incomparable”, I said that they had stretched the term “pop metal” to its limits, the pop being poppier and the heavy being heavier. The problem with “Let The World Know” is that the pop embraced its dance variety and the heavy is like a ghost – translucent and unnatural. Take “Done With Broken Hearts”, for instance. When Stoffe starts screaming is so abrupt, so out of place, that it feels like it’s just an excuse for them to keep using the word “metal” and not how the song really should have turned out (by the way, peeps, harsh/growling vocals isn’t enough to brand something as metal). And “Abnormal” will make you feel like you’ve just stepped into a rave party! Pop metal, okay, that’s actually interesting. Pop dance metal, now that’s way out of line.

I won’t give up on them just yet, but “Let The World Know” won’t be part of any playlist of mine.

Karisma Records sign jazz rockers Ossicles

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 19th March 2014 by Nico Davidson

Karisma Records, the Norwegian label that focuses on the more progressive side of music, have recently signed jazz rockers Ossicles and will be releasing the duo’s follow-up album to their 2012 release Mantlepiece. The band will be entering the studio in the summer to begin recording and it is expected that the new, as yet untitled album, will hit the streets towards the end of the year.

Formed in 2011 by cousins Sondre Veland on drums, percussion, vocals and keyboards, and Bastian Veland on guitars, vocals, bass, upright bass and keyboards, Ossicles is, according to the band, a constantly evolving project that is influenced by genres as varied as jazz, rock, avent-garde, ambient, noise and minimalism.  Mantlepiece, which was a double album released on Ossicles‘ own label, No Weather Records,  was largely written when the two cousins were around the ages of 16 and 17, but also includes later material, as well as tracks written during the recording process itself.  On the strength of this release Ossicles was invited by Mike Portnoy to appear at the Progressive Nation at Sea Festival in 2014, an opportunity the band sadly had to turn down due to the high cost of travelling to the USA to join the ship in Miami.

Arch Enemy announce new vocalist

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 17th March 2014 by Nico Davidson

Early June will see the ninth studio album, War Eternal, released by Swedish death metal warriors Arch Enemy world wide via Century Media and Trooper Entertainment in Japan. With the ninth studio album, the band will be debuting their brand new vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, formerly of The Angonist. Angela Gossow, who joined Arch Enemy in 2000 and made her debut on the now classic Wages Of Sin, will be stepping down as front-woman and focusing on management, while Alissa takes her place. Angela comments:

Dear Arch Enemy fans, this is not easy to tell you… I have decided to step down from being Arch Enemy’s voice of anger. After 13 years of pure fucking metal, 6 studio albums and countless tours through five continents, I feel the need to enter a different phase in my life, be with my family and pursue other interests. I will however remain business manager for Arch Enemy, and I will continue to develop my artist management roster.

I am staying true to my heavy metal roots, just leaving the spotlight so to speak. I am passing the torch to the super talented Alissa White-Gluz, whom I’ve known as a dear friend and a superb vocalist for many years. I always thought she deserved a chance to shine – and now she’s getting it. Just like I got that chance back in 2001.

I want to thank all Arch Enemy fans, our labels Century Media (worldwide) and Trooper Entertainment (Japan), our dedicated road crew, and in particular Michael, Daniel and Sharlee for their love and support throughout all these years. It’s been one hell of a ride! We conquered every situation, made it through thick & thin together in the most exciting and rewarding time of my life. Thank you all for being there with me on stage, in front of the stage, and backstage. You have touched my heart, and I hope I was able to give something back to you. I am grateful for the wonderful memories – I will cherish them forever!

I am looking forward to the next decade of Arch Enemy madness! Right now I am listening through rough mixes of the new studio album and I am blown away! 2014 will see a renewed Arch Enemy at the top of their game. I am proud to be part of this Arch Enemy chapter, albeit in a different way – revving up the engines behind the scenes. I hope to see you in front of the stage; I will join you there this time. Let the killing begin, once again!

In related news, in three days time, the band will unveil their video for the title track of their upcoming album War Eternal.

Rival Sons introduce new bassist Dave Beste

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 15th March 2014 by Nico Davidson

After recently completely the work on their fourth studio album at LCS Studios in Nashville, Rival Sons have announced the addiiton to their line-up of their new bassist Dave Beste. Originally from Lincoln, Nebraska, Dave Beste moved to Los Angeles in 2000 to pursue music professionally, and has previously performed with the likes of Maroon 5 and Rocco Deluca And The Burden among others.  Beste has been touring with Rival Sons since last August following the departure of Robin Everhart, and plays on the band’s new album, due to be released this summer on Earache Records. Rival Sons frontman Jay Buchanan comments:

Personnel change in a band this tight can be a very worried thing.  Suddenly, you have to reprogram yourself from hearing and doing things in a familiar way in order to move forward, sink into and appreciate the new.  That ‘new’ is Dave Beste and he’s been completely killing it.  A close friend of mine for many years, Beste committed wholeheartedly to helping us out when we were in a tight spot and it didn’t take long to see that the fit couldn’t be more natural.  Also, I can’t wait for people to hear his playing on this new record because he delivered in spades.  So, now it is official.  Bonafide.  Dave Beste is a Rival Son.

New bassist Dave Beste also comments:

I’m thrilled to be joining Rival Sons as a member.  Getting to travel with your buddies and play in a band you already dig is a really special thing.  I couldn’t be happier they asked me to join them in this endeavor.
