Vesania announce new album title

Posted in News, Studio Report with tags on 14th January 2014 by izaforestspirit

Polish symphonic black metallers Vesania have just announced that their new album, the long awaited follow-up to 2007’s ‘Distractive Killusions’, will be entitled ‘Deus Ex Machina’. The band is currently working on it and no official release has been revealed but the album is expected to see the light of day at same point later this year.

Here’s an official statement from the band:

“It is high time to share it with you all. It took us a year to get to this point, as we were constantly reinventing ideas and ways of making everything the best we can. Vesania has always been very demanding in the matters of writing, arranging and recording, and we care a lot. Now, when we tracked last vocal parts and when mixing is a perspective of a month or two, let us proclaim it. ”

New Edguy album almost finished

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 13th January 2014 by Nico Davidson

Edguy sneaked into the studio a while back to record the follow-up album to their chart breaking album Age Of The Joker. Surprisingly, the band have been able to keep it all quiet up to now. The band has issued the following brief statement from the studio:

We have focused on what makes this band unique and recorded what we believe is going to be the strongest & heaviest album this band has ever recorded. We didn’t waste any time with updates or distractions. There is no doubt, that this album is going to be the album we’ll be measured against in the future. And it makes us proud to say that as a band that has been existing for over 22 years now, fully aware that the best is yet to come.

The album is in the mixing process right now and will be out in April. More details will be revealed soon.

Culted stream new song from Oblique To All Paths

Posted in News with tags , , , , on 13th January 2014 by Nico Davidson

Black metal’s own doom hounds Culted are streaming their abysmal new track, Transmittal, via Pitchfork. The soul-suffocating anti-hymn is taken from the band’s album Oblique To All Paths, which is scheduled for release via Relapse Records later this month. The sorrow-laden track can be streamed at this location. Michael Klassen (guitar/bass/percussion/noise) comments on the track:

Transmittal is like the title suggests, a song intended to transmit an experience to the listener. Initially, it may lull the mind with hypnotic effects and repetition perhaps blurring vision and numbing consciousness. But it awakens with a scream to spark a flame and illuminate the world with fire, while scorching the wings of angels to finally reveal the collapse and coldness of space to the listener.

Oblique To All Paths will see official release on CD, 2xLP and digital formats via Relapse Records on 21st January in North America, 20th January in the UK/World, and 17th January in Germany/Benelux/Finland. For pre-orders, point your browser to this location. iTunes purchasers should go here.

New Savage Messiah track streaming online

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , , on 13th January 2014 by Nico Davidson

London metallers Savage Messiah have posted a new song from their upcoming album The Fateful Dark, which is set for release on 10th March in Europe via Earache and 18th March in North American via Century Media and Earache.

Savage Messiah, who were recently banned from entering the Freemason UK headquarters in London for a photo shoot after the society deemed the band’s name offensive, are releasing three instant grat tracks on iTunes which can be downloaded in advance of the album’s release.

The new track, called Minority of One, is available now as an instant grat download and can be heard below, along with a previously-released track, Cross of Babylon.  A further track, Hellblazer, will be available as an instant grat download on iTunes on 10th February. Savage Messiah frontman Dave Silver comments:

The title for this song comes from a famous saying by Ghandi, who said that even if you’re in a minority of one, the truth is the truth.  Which is a good message to people about breaking the mould and not getting sucked into ‘group think’ mentality.  Standing up for what’s objectively right and not compromising for the sake of social acceptance.  Musically, this is my favourite Savage Messiah track ever; we’ve managed to marry the thrash and heavy metal elements into a cohesive track, which is catchy and melodic, but still fast and thrashy.  Enjoy!

Ex Libris – Medea

Posted in Uncategorized with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , on 13th January 2014 by Nico Davidson

Ex Libris
Medea
Released 18th January 2014
Progressive Metal/Symphonic Metal
Self-Released

Holland has become a country known for its female-fronted talent, such as Within Temptation, ReVamp, Epica and Delain, so it won’t come as a surprise to many when I say that’s the country that progressive powerhouse Ex Libris hail from. Having played as support to a few of the above mentioned bands, Ex Libris, who are fronted by the talented Dianne van Giersbergen, are slowly building a reputation for themselves on the international metal scene for their unique and bombastic sound sound. Whilst Medea is their second album, the band have achieved a lot more than most bands have.

Named after the Medea of Greek mythology, the album is kick started by the title track, Medea, which is a raging storm composed of swaying guitar passages and crashing waves of percussion, lined with vocals sharp enough the cut Mount Olympus in two. The lashings of orchestration help add to the tragic and dramatic character of the song. Sailing from the seas of the tragic Medea into the fearsome ocean that is Murderess In Me, the album’s atmosphere morphs into something more sinister, allowing for the music to become more cut-throat whilst retaining its classical and mythic vibe. The riffs have a sharper edge than the previous track, allowing for Dianne’s vocals to glide swiftly over the ocean of the music without hindrance.

On The Ocean’s Command begins with the soothing sound of the sea and the creaking wood abroad a ship as the climatic use of guitars, courtesy of Paul, make themselves heard before the vivid keyboards, as supplied by Koen, make their striking entrance. The song builds itself up into a tense masterpiece, tightly knitting each element of the song together. Dianne’s vocal work is particularly impressive during this track, changing like the winds, expectedly and unexpectedly. The following song, My Dream I Dream, focuses more on the emotion than the dramatics, allowing for a vast river of feeling to flow through each aspect of the track. Peter’s basswork sound more profound, making itself known from beginning to end, especially in sudden thrilling and heavy portion of the track, colliding smoothly with Eeclo’s clear-cut and strict drumming.

Song Of Discord marches in like a column of hoplites on their way to war. There is a powerful and harrowing atmosphere conjured up throughout the song, giving the music more punch than would be expected. The vocal duet of Dianne van Giersbergen and Damien Wilson opened up new possibilities for this song, not just vocally but throughout its performance in which the two vocalists play the parts of Medea and her husband, the hero Jason. It will be interesting to see how Ex Libris can pull this one off live. A Mother’s Lament begins straight away with a hook, grabbing attention from every angle and refusing to let go. The guitars and rhythm sections hammer away, fortifying the song whilst the vocals and keyboards add the glitz and the glam to the song, keeping it from becoming a dull affair.

Daughter Of Corinth sees another drastic change in the pace and sound of Medea, turning into a fearsome hydra of progressive riffs, eerie vocals and hypnotic drum passages while other aspects of the song are more shadowy, keeping withdrawn like a Gorgon hunting their victim. A Tale Told makes use of other elements but remains true to Ex Libris’ overall sound as well before the album moves onto the ten minute and fifty second long epic From Birth To Bloodshed which like some of the previous tracks paves way for a drastic change in the album. The riffs during this track are callous, leaving no room for mercy whilst the vocals are at their pinnacle, adding emphasis to the rest of the song. The instrumentation throughout the song take sup the spirit of the ocean, changing from the violent crashing of waves to gentler sailing.

Ex Libris have a knack for writing good music and Medea takes you down more twists and turns than the Labyrinth, keeping focus on the music as new life is breathed into Medea’s impressively tragic story by one talented band.

5/5

Sonata Arctica reveal artwork for new album, Pariah’s Child

Posted in News with tags , , , , , on 9th January 2014 by Nico Davidson

31st March will see the release of a new Sonata Arctica album entitled Pariah’s Child. It is the band’s eight studio album and the follow-up to their successful release Stones Grow Her Name. Today the breathtakingly beautiful cover artwork, as seen above, for Pariah’s Child has been revealed. Vocalist Tony Kakko explains the thoughts behind the album title and the artwork:

As always it’s pretty hard coming up with a name for the new baby. I tried to approach it from many angles; how this is our 8th album and how easy it would be to abuse that fact. All the symbolism of figure eight, eternity and so on. But that just did not feel right as it’s been done so many times. Then I started to think how we’d in ways abandoned our “totem animal”, the wolf and all what comes with the territory. As the music on the album is bowing more towards the “old” Sonata, meaning more power metal style elements and wolves in many of the songs in one form or another, it was clear we need a wolf on the cover. An abandoned wolf. A pariah. Or Pariah’s child, actually. The new generation to bring the old logo back.

Following the release of Pariah’s Child in March, Sonata Arctica will be touring once again. Keyboardist Henrik “Henkka” Klingenberg commented:

It’s been a while since we last toured Europe, so I’m very happy that we can announce our first tour with our new album. Since the album will be out in March 2014, we don’t want to waste any time but will head out for a full European Tour. Our tour will start in Eindhoven, NL on April 10th, 2014. The whole band is really looking forward to play some new songs for you and introduce our new bass player, Pasi, for all our fans. He’s a monster live, you’ll see. Check below for the tourdates and we’ll see you in a few months!

There aren’t superlatives enough to describe how much the band has longed for these three songs to be released. We are sure fans have been anxious to know what the band sounds like today after all the turmoil and old members leaving and new members joining. We feel that these three songs represent the band perfectly. We are currently working on the new album, an album that will be filled to the brim with what we know to be The Haunted. Sister stream new track Naked

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , on 9th January 2014 by Nico Davidson

Swedish sleaze punks Sister have begun streaming their new single Naked via Revolver Magazine. The song is taken from the band’s upcoming album Disgusted Vultures, which will be released through Metal Blade Records on 27th January.

Naked is a slow and powerful song that was written during some dark times. It reflects the feeling of being exposed and how life sometimes can be cruel to you. Naked is kind of different from all the other singles we’ve released and it feels like the right time for doing something like that. This album will give you even more suprises further on!

Posted in News with tags , , , , , , , on 8th January 2014 by Nico Davidson

Sweden’s premier power metallers Sabaton have unveiled the artwork, as seen above, for their upcoming album Heroes which will be released in May, later this year. The band are currently in Abyss Studio with Peter Tägtgren recording the new album. The stunningly powerful artwork was created Péter Salla. The band’s bassist Pär Sundström comments:

We will record the album in Abyss studios together with Peter Tägtgren who also did Carolus Rex for us. He still has some aces in his sleeves that we are sure will lift the new album. We had the title in mind since before we even recorded Carolus Rex and we already had ideas for artwork years ago. We had a few different ones to choose from, but when we saw this one, we knew it was the right one for this album.
