Atomic Death Metal is the debut album from the German death metal band Atomwinter. It is the follow-up to their self-titled demo which was released back in 2010.

Now with song titles like Desecration of Dead Bodies and a front cover that Cannibal Corpse would be proud of, you pretty much know that you’re entering death metal territory. First off is ‘Sentinels of Doom and Horror’ offering some slow, old-school death metal with the stereotypical growls and thrash metal tinges in the guitar riffs. The aptly named Ghouls of the Pit sees several changes in speed, starting off a little faster than its predecessor then slowing down again towards the latter half of the track only to pick up the pace at the end. This time the vocals really are ghoul-like with the singer’s eerie growling working well with the raw thrash metal guitar riffage to give the song that creepy feel.

Another track that stands out is The Crypt Is Calling, the first track to feature a drum solo at the start right before the guitars kick in; paving the way for some more old-school death metal. Oh, and by old-school death metal I’m referring to something along the lines of Bolt Thrower (for vocal style) with hints old Entombed or Morbid Angel in the guitars. Howling Winds of Sorrow sees the focus shift towards the growly vocals whilst the guitar patterns take a turn towards doomier climates. The aforementioned Desecration of Dead Bodies is a fine example of the union between death metal and gore. The lyrics are perfectly matched to the music with words like “suffering” and “torture” leaving no shadow of a doubt that these guys embody their chosen genre.

Overall ‘Atomic Death Metal’ is exactly what it says on the tin, or in this case disc. Atomwinter is old-school death metal to the bone. If you’re a fan of the genre then this album is for you.
