Baphometic Chaosium is the third album from the American black metal band Lightning Swords of Death. It is the follow-up to the 2010 album ‘The Extra Dimensional Wound’.

After a bleak, nihilistic ambient style intro, the title track gives in to some standard black metal with occasional thrash metal guitar undertones and a gritty feel to it. The vocals have an eerie tinge to them and the style shifts from whispers to howling adding to the overall sense of unease. Even the guitar style is abrasive, unrefined which helps to maintain this haunting atmosphere.

Take the ambient instrumental Cloven Shields for instance, it sounds like something befitting the soundtrack of a horror movie. Something creepy this way comes and only doom lies ahead. Chained to Decay witnesses a change to a much slower pace with the guitars the become more droning as singer whispers and howls/rasps the words of despair. Then R’Lyeh Wuurm picks up the pace once again as the drums re-enter the fold and the mid-paced guitars make the song more distinctive than its predecessors. Oaken Chrysalis features some changes in the guitar patterns which, albeit never earning the tag of ‘melodic’ or ‘catchy’, revive the thrash metal elements that were missing from most of the other tracks on here. Yet the eerie atmosphere is never too far behind as the album comes to a close with a haunting dark ambient part towards the latter half of the song.

In summary this album is bleak, nihilistic and somewhat dry. What’s more to the point is that there’s nothing revolutionary here as far as the black metal genre is concerned.
