Thrash Metal/Heavy Metal

‘At The Ruins’ is the debut album from the Finnish thrash metal band Sorrowed. It follows a series of demos recorded since the band’s formation back in 1997.

After a bit of a rough start the opening track ‘I Am Pain’ kicks off with some thrash metal guitar riffs and aggressive drumming. The vocals offer nothing new and are fairly average for this genre but they seem to suit the band’s overall style. Similar things can be said about ‘Hateregret’ where once again it’s mostly the catchy guitar riffs which make the song stand out. What’s interesting about that particular track is the illusive slow start with the drums which gives in to some fast, catchy guitar riffage later on.

Another memorable track is ‘Circles’ mostly due to the guitar parts in the intro and the powerful mix of riffs and drumming towards the latter part of the song before the vocals resume. In many ways it’s the vocals which are a weak link on this album. That’s not to say that they are bad per se but it could have been so much better. The undisputed highlight of the album is ‘War’ where the powerful, thrash metal guitars and drums work well to maintain the speed and ferocity of the track. If they played this live and I would definitely join in with the head-banging.
