Tzaraath – Abortion EP

Abortion EP
Due for release: July 2012
Black Metal

‘Abortion’ is the new EP from the Swedish black metal band Tzaraath. The band states several cult black metal bands such as Darkthrone, Marduk and Dark Funeral as influences. The EP acts as a teaser to the upcoming new album though Tzaraath are yet to confirm the title and the release date.

The opening track ‘Jesus Wept’ remains true to the band’s influences offering some ferocious black metal with Dark Funeral style vocals, hints of Gorgoroth and possibly Burzum. The guitars may not match the speed of old Marduk but that doesn’t mean that they are not powerful. There’s also a handful of solos in here which may reflect the band’s earlier experiments with black-thrash metal.

The deceptively slow intro to ‘Metamorphosis’ leaves the listener unprepared for the change in pace which, though gradual remains somewhat unexpected. The final track ‘Fertilis Mortem’ combines the ferocity of the first track with some slower monotone riffs giving it an eerie feel akin to that of early Mayhem.

3.5/5 – Looks like there’s still hope for old school Nordic black metal.
